Reading fiction is nothing more than escapism. Fiction readers are no better than animefags. Actually I would say they are worse given their pretentiousness. Animefags are at least honest with themselves.
If you are not primarily reading non-fiction I cannot see you as an adult.

As a wise anon once posted on this board, non-ficition has to categorize itself with fiction. It is thus that fiction is the supreme creation and synthesis of reality and non-reality. Fiction captures the meta-narratives, weaves and plays with those rich senses of chronology, movement in event, poetry, and evokes a transitory nature of being in its words as they are set out on its pages. Fiction encapsulates the rites and damnations of human experience more authentically than empirical reality ever could; tales of love and loss run through rich folds of fiction's corpus. Fiction has its place.

Correct and that’s exactly why I read fiction. There’s a world of mythology and imagination, which presents itself as an alternative to this one, which is superior and I intend to partake in thag world over this one as much as I’m capable until this world serves as nothing more than a means by which I can access this alternative more openly and with more potential.

Two points, the opposite of escaping is being imprisoned, so you take a positive word and make it negative.

We escape reality, you are imprisoned by it.

That said, I can imagine the novel by Maarten 't Hart that I am presently reading, which describes the life in rural towns, the beauty of nature, deaths in the family and squables in the reformed community as escapism.

In fact reading his novel makes me feel more grounded in reality.

Not all fiction is genre trash. And your whole point of fiction being pure escapism falls apart when you point out how many great works of fiction like Ana Karenina construct worlds that no sane person would want to live in.

Not really, it can be instructional. The whole point of well written fiction is that it's realistic (even in unrealistic scenarios). If the characters act in a way that makes sense, you can learn from their actions. It's life experience just as much as journals or epistolary literature, it just needs to be well written, which is admittedly a can of worms since the concept of good writing is abandoned in virtue of empty satisfaction of impulse, which you may call escapism but isn't really escapism. Escapism has a utility unlike pandering and self-serving stimulation. Sadly we live in a time where the definition of all this, culture, entertainment, escapism, pandering, all of it belongs to the same maelstrom. It's the result of language itself being under assault.

There is truth in fiction. Nonfiction is subject to change based on the writer, but fiction is the honest expression of the subconscious. You can ignore it and be an encyclopedia, but then your world is restricted to what is instead of what is and what could be.
