I prefer not to, and instead just spend time with good, tolerable people.
I used to spend most of my time with other creatives, until it became clear they were just lazy narcissists looking to make a security net of connections. Not that this is necessarily an evil thing, it just got really boring

Good and tolerable aren’t really high bars— just don’t be annoying and don’t be a blatantly horrendous piece of shit

>how do you connect with writers irl
Writing is the least cool of all the creative arts because of its solitary nature and low presentability. By those virtues writers are generally much harder to find.
Endeavour to meet musicians instead, for their wide social circles and hangout spots.

How much glamour can you make out of sitting at your writing desk in your underwear, sniffing your own coffee-inspired farts while recalling that great scene that popped in your head in the shower.

I joined a meetup a few years ago that meets twice a month. No agenda, no critiques, just writers hanging out for an hour or two and talking about stuff (usually not very writing related). It's actually really nice, but the quality of the writers is very low. If you are snobby this likely won't work. And there is a class of human that just goes to meetups because they are lonely or bored and they don't care that they aren't writers or whatever the group is about.

I also belong to a critique group. Absolutely essential. You should have at least one and you should switch it up every year or so.

I also go to writers conferences. These usually cost a few hundred dollars so not accessible to everyone. But find one in your area and try if you have the means. It's worth it.
