Why do people hate underground man?
After finishing reading the book I curiously peered at some goodreads reviews and noticed that a lot of folks felt mad, irritated and disgusted with the protagonist.
I felt he pretty much did a good job at justifying the way he lives and he doesn't seems to harm anyone but himself. At most what I felt was a mild hint of sadness and pity for him. What surprised me is how apparently the book brings out such strong feelings of repulse in most people. I am autistic for taking these reviews literally? Or are these people very much like the men of action underground men described?

Look up the number 7.
Filtered by the first chapter. That's why I do not recommend the book to people who aren't interested in literature, normal people won't survive it.

The protagonist is supposed to be repulsive, and yet relatable. That's why the book is disturbing, and that's also why it's good. Comments like pic seem to think that good books are the ones that make you feel good.

For whatever reason, I found Notes to be largely uninteresting and forgettable. I liked Dostoy's other works, but that one really didn't do much for me. In surprised it's as popular and generates as strong of opinions as it does.

What I found interesting is that people who felt this way must somehow be reading it critically to some degree, as they are kind of "disagreeing with the author". Looking at these same reviews I found none describing their thought process behind hating this man. Is there anyone here who felt this way? What should undeground man be doing then, "touching grass"?

he does hurt others, when he worked he was a vengeful nuisance, he still would be if he hadn't gotten an inheritance. He hurts Liza too, and besides, only hurting oneself isn't vindicating anyways.
