I read like a maniac in elementary school but stopped once I hit junior high (not sure why). What are some books that you guys think would be good for someone who wants to get back into reading (I'm 18)?

Sherlock Holmes!

A Study In Scarlet is where you should begin. But be warned, it is a short novel and the second half of it is mega boring. The rest of the SH is mostly short stories...And it really won't harm you to skip A Study In Scarlet, you just won't get the story of how Holmes and Watson meet.

If you want something easier and more entertaining, start with Vonnegut. If you like science fiction do Asimov hard on the kitchen table. Poe's stories are good. Chekhov is more serious literature.

I suggest you get a short story collection of classics and read through it. You'll find out which authors you like, the stories don't take much time, they're usually simple enough compared to larger works by the author, etc. That's what I did.

Orly?

I shall investigate your claim further, though I doubt its veracity!

I got one from a yard sale for my birthday and it wasn't that good. Seems like a really good topic for a separate thread.
