It was already difficult to achieve something worthwhile in the past and today that's become pretty much impossible. Not a single good thing will come of what's left of this terrible century.

Geoffrey Hill, John Ashbery, Derek Walcott all published in the 21st century.
Instagram is not an indication of where modern poetry is at, you have to read magazines and contemporary collections for that

I can never distinguish her actual work from the parodies.......not a good sign for a poet

>> No.19052398

Poetry is a dead medium.

It is either too embedded in Romanticism-era clichés or it is too academic.

Also people are not properly educated on poetry in schools so cannot tell the difference between soppy cliché-ridden pop ballads and pop/slam poetry and actual poetry. Hence why someone like Rupi Kaur is so popular; easy to digest and point blank.

Nobody reads contemporary poetry anymore except academics, people interested in serious literature, and other poets. And even then most literature hobbyists don't read contemporary poetry. Even John Ashbery, who until his death was probably the most lauded living poet in the English language, could not make a living off of it.

How do we change this?

We need to get the sexiest people and celebrities to start reading both classic and contemporary poets.

Any other suggestions?

Write a novel and include a character who writes poems or something. Have your poem be his dialogue. No one is going to buy a book full of poetry. Well, maybe a femoid will buy one, but only if it has Live,Laugh,Love on the cover.
