Exactly why you SHOULDN’T be going into tech right now. It’s a field driven by innovation, and the innovation field is completely crowded out. There are millions of people working their butts off in the name of finding ‘the next big thing’, some of them with billions of dollars to back them up. Who’s gonna find it, you? Could be. But unless you’re best friends with Tim Apple, or you’re that Indian girl with a higher IQ than Einstein or something, then your chances are practically zero.

Do tech if it’s what you want. Some of these tech companies give great benefits, you could live pretty comfortably off of them. But if you go into the field expecting to be the next Henry Ford or Mark Zuckerberg, you’re almost certainly gonna be in for a long road of disappointment.

If you mean "self-help", as in, the modern marketing term and genre of books, then they are indeed rather worthless. Those books are almost always the result of market forces and popular consensus, they're designed to sell and they achieve that through a whole myriad of marketing tricks and not real insight. They usually take a piece of "conventional wisdom" and give it a new spin or slogan, or they might play with your expectations and say you should do the opposite and make you believe they figured something out no one else has. Often they are just a shallow interpretation of a larger philosophical work. The idea is you're too dumb to read Aurelius or Machiavelli, so you need a modern shmuck to break down the concepts into monetary contemporary terms.

Having said all that, books contain knowledge which can often give you the tools and insight to deal with all kinds of problems. However, they aren't marketed as such. If you want to be rich, you should study financing, business, economics, investment etc. and not just one book, but a whole set of them with various view points and competing ideas. Same with any other problem or goal you might have, study the actual problem space instead of a digested piece of shit.
