>Xenophon’s “disguise” as a man of action earned philosophy a more respectful hearing in his own as well as other ages. But that same reputation proved to be a stumbling block for scholars in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries who were unable to imagine that a military or practical man could possess a genuine understanding of Socratic philosophy.

That's his best book, an escape adventure. His writing feels thin otherwise (comparatively speaking); he's no Plato; no Thucydides.

“The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools.”

Yeah, Thucydides didn't say that, that was attributed to him around 2012.

>“‘How good it is to keep one's stock of utensils in order, and how easy to find a suitable place in a house to put each set in, I have already said. [19] And what a beautiful sight is afforded by boots of all sorts and conditions ranged in rows! How beautiful it is to see cloaks of all sorts and conditions kept separate, or blankets, or brazen vessels, or table furniture!

Great book. Skip to the part before where the explains the economic utility of organisation and tidiness with the analogy of the Phoenician boatman. If everything has a place you can access it quickly and immediately know what is missing or low on supply and plan accordingly. Organisation and tidinesss increases information efficiency that every homestead and enterprise needs to best function.

Looks like a page-cutter; a little ironic because unneeded for a Loeb or most any other modern book; I have picked up a few antique books with uncut pages however: you a collector of cheap old volumes, anon?

It's the Fairbairn–Sykes trench knife from WWI. Some think it is the best fighting knife ever made.

Not fighting, best for talking down people from behind. You don't duel with it. You stab their subclavian artery
