Let's discuss /lit/ video games. I really like the dialogue and the other readables that appear in Deus Ex. They remind me of William Gibson's prose -- and not just because the game is somwhat cyber punk like Gibson's novels. Pic related is a quote from the game.

Well that's no surprise, since Sheldon Pacotti (Deus Ex's main writer) repeatedly cites Gibson as his main literary influence in interviews.
In one interview he said his main philosophical influence when writing Deus Ex was Foucault, and I can totally see it in the game's themes. The Morpheus dialogue is very remniscient of Discipline and Punish (and the parts about "worship" remind md of Nietzsche, who Foucault was of course heavily influenced by), and biopower sheds light on the transhumanist commentary with Gunther etc.

every time i remember deus ex i get an irrational urge to make a video game even though i haven't even played them in like a decade. i even have the skills to pull something small-scale off (i'm a competent writer, i have a programming background and some art skills) but i just don't give a shit about "gameplay" anymore. i don't want to shoot things or manage my inventory, that shit bores me to tears. i just want interactive storytelling.

is there a market for something that would be almost exclusively elaborate dialogue trees with no gameplay beyond "now go talk to the other guy"? or would i be eaten alive by purists whining that it's not a "real" game? i have no idea what video game culture is like anymore, i haven't even logged into steam in years.

It's not just about the story/characters/worldbuilding, but also about the actual game mechanics. What variables are there within the game? Take HP for example, what can you do with HP? You can lose it, gain it, recover it, donate it, etc. as a result of player -> player interactions, player -> enemy interactions, enemy -> player interactions, and very rarely enemy -> enemy interactions. What decisions does the player have regarding HP? They can block, they can attack, they can heal, etc. Does the game become more or less interesting with more decisions available to the player? Surely it would be more interesting, but at what point does it become too complicated? What games are able to strike this balance? What games do this well? Why? What makes them good at it? As a player, what do you find satisfying? Why? It's not really something that you can get out of other forms of media.

because they are the opposite of what i like and the opposite of a "literary" game. the potential in video games is to do something with writing you can't do on the page, make it reactive, modular, distribute it around a virtual space etc. visual novels as far as i can tell are just reading for the less literate. you write something extremely formally basic and you feed it to the "player" all chopped up into tiny chunks with a picture of whatever room the protagonist is in and whichever character is speaking. then the anime schoolgirl gets angry so you redundantly communicate the anger by switching the drawing for one where she's obviously mad and so on, as if i the reader was too dumb to grasp that from the way the lines are written. i don't see what the purpose of any of it is beyond helping the illiterate parse the writing and those on the spectrum parse the emotions. i'm not either of those things so i just find it insulting.
