i'm in a book club with my my mum and a bunch of other people from the area, mostly old ladies although there are a couple more my age
i joined like a decade ago when i was living with my parents and we take it in turns to pick a book for everyone to read and discuss and host the evening
it's honestly one of the highlights of the month for me, reading and discussing something in depth with a bunch of people who miraculously aren't idiots is so nice. from other people i've talked to, ours is apparently quite rare in everyone actually reading all the books and bringing something to the table

I am in one but only at my 3rd book right now so i only went to 2 meetings. Both of which were a lot of fun even though i'm mostly awkward as hell.

As this anon says >>19335867 . It's mostly older ladies but even then immensely fun to just discuss a book everyone read. It is fun to hear how others have perceived a book and then maybe change your own perspective on the book or see how both your differing perspectives line up.

I'm also the youngest in my bookclub (~20) from what I can estimate most people were in their 30's. And most books we read are modern novels that generally focus on feminine narritives e.g. motherhood. That isn't a complete problem for me because it shows me a side of books I would probably never touch in my life otherwise.

Oh right as final note. In my first meeting at that bookclub I was talking to this guy that was around my age and it seemed like some of these e/lit/ist tards brainwashed this kid or that he is one of those people. Which was interesting to see in person to say the least

I'm running my uni's literature club. Covid fucking wrecked us and after a year and a half of zoom meetings, it was pretty much gone.
There are new people interested, including two guys with a lot of potential. One who I can just tell he's a based deus vult sperg, and another who when I asked what he likes to read, listed a dozen Russian authors, and Russians alone.
That guy said he wanted to read next either The Gulag Archipelago, or Pride and Prejudice. Hope he didn't say the latter just to not sound weird, as I picked it to read next; we need some girls in the club too.

Many years ago, I was in a book club here in the UK.
When it was my second turn to choose what we all read I chose this, after my first choice John Wyndham's 'The Kraken Wakes' had gone down rather well.
It's an excellent, but challenging, apocalyptic sci-fi novel written in the early 1970s.
Everyone was initially pleased as one of the previous books that was well-received by the group had been 'War of the Worlds' by HG Wells, but after they'd read my choice and we met, I was asked to leave.

I didn't found it, though I joined when back when it was being founded. They were a group of friends, almost all gone now.
Most of the trouble setting it up had to do with the students' association, so it's going to be entirely different for anyone else. Technically we're entitled to some support, though we didn't see anything from the students' association back then. Now though, they have a room for the clubs and we're going to have our meetings there, so that's nice. No food or drinks, and need to reserve the room first though.
The most complicated part is dedicing on times and dates. If it's too early lots of people have classes, if it's too late everyone already went home. You can't please everybody.
Engagement in general is really hard, but that's with all clubs. Even the people who show up hardly ever reads the books.

I've only spoken to him the one time 'cause he didn't attend the latest one but basically.

Basically he was very interested in religion but wasn't religious himself. He had read a lot about religion in the west and was busy increasing his knowledge about the eastern religions.

Besides that when I talked about my plan to start reading some dostoevsky he started talking about his interest in right wing literature and how he was quite interested in it himself. When it went towards right wing politics I quickly steered into some other topic I can't completely remember anymore solely for my fear that the conversation would go down some weird rabbit hole where i couldn't end the conversation anymore.

yeah i consider myself so blessed that our sessions actually are all about discussing the book. it starts with whoever picked it talking about why and what they like about it etc, then we take turns saying what we thought, then we have a nice freeflowing discussing that naturally comes from that. it's usually a couple of hours
occasionally people end up talking about their own lives towards the end which i really don't care about but for the most part it actually is just a big nice discussion about a book with a bunch of people who like reading good books
people don't show up to the meet if they haven't read the book. for example barbara skipped satantango because she couldn't get past the cat killing lol

it's longer that that lol. there are always more books. we read a new one every 4 -6 weeks
ftr the next one is manservant and maidservant which is my choice which we are gonna read towards the end of this month. i strongly suspect some people are gonna hate it but i gotta share this strange fucking lady with everyone in the hope someone else is into it and just to hear why everyone else hates it so much
my goal is to to get everyone to read something they haven't read before, that isn't like something they've read before, that i think has worth. not necessarily something they'll like

Currently have a book club with my brother and some friends. Fairly casual, we take turns suggesting one book to read a month, gather for beers and/food when we can and discuss the book we chose. The rules are simple: each person gets their turn to pick a book. It must be a book no-one has read before, not even the person picking it. For longer books we might read it over 2 months and discuss the halfway point; we're all fairly quick readers so it doesn't take us long to read through books.
It's nice because we all have different tastes, and there are books I've read that I would never have picked up in a million years that I found surprisingly enjoyable. Sometimes the discussion is shitting all over the book (you don't always know you're about to read a trash book), sometimes its some really deep discussions, sometimes its fluff discussions. It's weird but sometimes the deepest discussions come out of the simplest books.
It also keeps me on my reading game: I don't slack off reading, and I find I read a lot more with book-club forced reading: After reading the book club book, I will inevitably pick up another book I've been meaning to read and read that since I'm not in "book-reading mode". 10/10, good way to get to know people better too, or at least how they think about the world.

I had a stroke. I meant since I am in book reading mode.

I'm in a Philosophy reading group which is basically a book club I guess except there were at least 4 women who came to our introductory meetings and all 4 of them left and never came back after we started actually discussing the book. I don't know what it is, we were very welcoming.
