Maybe get a tiny bit of background on Twain or even read one or two of his short stories. Also, read it like an adventure/comedy book as much as a literary giant.

I only appreciated Huck Finn once I spent a couple semesters studying other books written in America before and during the time of Twain (i.e. Portrait of Lady, a thoroughly long-winded and dull book). His influence becomes much more apparent once you've done that. I shudder to think what could have happened to American literature without him.

But yeah, just remember that he is as much a hero to the modern comedians and satirists as he is to writers. It's really an incredible accomplishment.

Don't read the edition where they swapped the word "nigger" with "roody-poo".
