I actually do not understand how ANYONE can not believe in God, when it is so clearly obvious that He exists. One can, reasonably, doubt that Christianity is exactly true. Or very specific aspects of religious morality. But reality literally makes no sense if you believe there is no creator deity. Humanity developed on a planet with abundant food and biodiversity. It also developed on a planet with the perfectly level of gravity to allow exit into orbit (which is exceedingly rare). Human life also, somehow, possesses a form of consciousness, a thing totally unprecedented as far as we can tell in the entire span of existence. It is a thing so utterly and completely bizarre that it demands an explanation, a force, capable of causing such a thing by means beyond what we can possibly know. And the best counterargument achievable by opponents is "Well this does not prove God exists". Which is fair, because it is essentially impossible to categorically prove something like God, but you also cannot prove other human beings are conscious and sentient, or that Hume was wrong when he said one day you could throw a rock at a window and it magically turns into a vase of flowers with no explanation. These things are taken to be true because reality is simply nonsense without them even if they are effectively axiomatic. And likewise, reality without God is simply nonsense. None of it makes sense.

That doesn't make believing in God a cope or a way of filling in the gaps. Those gaps will never be filled. They simply can't be. There's no way of doing so. God is the missing piece in reality.

Everything else is simply an answer to this question: "If God didn't have certain morals in mind, if He didn't believe certain ways of life would be right to live, then why is it that stable and happy societies generally look very similar?" Monogamy, for example, seems to be inherently stabilizing and conducive to human happiness, even though it's contrary to evolutionary and biological pressures to maximize male genetic dissemination. Why would that be the case if there weren't some force that had shaped human psychology to crave monogamy even when evolutionary pressure should demand polygyny?
