How do I teach literacy to my boyfriend?
Years of american public schooling in a black district and neglect have led him to be functionally illiterate and incapable of constructing any polysyllabic words, let alone a coherent sentence. He's as dumb as rocks and I'm afraid I'll have to teach him English from scratch. I am ESL, however, and my only exposure to English-learning books (grammar, vocabulary, syntax) has been through Brazil's basic curriculum (which sucks anyway). I plan on giving him some easily-digestible books to accompany his training, then introduce him to some higher forms of literature with time, but I'm not sure which books and in what order would be good.

Literally just use the starter kit. High school core books that aren't too difficult but still rise to the level of "literature." If even that's too much just try and get him to read anything at all. Pulpy genre fiction, graphic novels, whatever. What's most important is to impress upon him the idea that learning new things isn't that difficult and also can be fun. The American education system will have (by design) thoroughly disabused him of these notions, so expect some resistance.

Really thought this would be some not-so-subtle bait from the OP but maybe not. In any case, if it's nature you're fucked. It likely is too, nurture does not turn you dumb unless it's literal brain damage from getting whacked on the head or severely lacking diets when growing up. If it wasn't nature he'd at the very least be open to change, if not have started on that path on his own long ago.

That said, can't know until you tried it. Start him off with fiction, the easy stuff. For the love of God don't start him off with the fucking mandatory school reading literature or you'll put him off books forever, as they do to many children.

You shouldn't worry about the books themselves as much as his engagement to reading them. It's better he read Harry Potter with fervour than Moby Dick hating every second of it. You're supposed to get him started, he'll have to do the rest himself.
