The sad truth is that Karl was supposed to follow his family's footsteps to become a rabbi. Unfortunately, modernity fucked up that predestined career path. His own father couldn't follow it, neither did he. He was very highly critical of Jews even though he was one himself. The Prussian authorities couldn't tolerate his radical political and social opinions that grew out of frustrations and setbacks that he encountered to get his career going.
