Not sure about 'best' but my favorite is Robert Fitzgerald's version.

Lattimore feels very dry for me. I prefer other Homer translations.

Ruby Blondell's translations for the Focus Library. Great balance between literal without sacrificing style. I mich prefer them to the Grene/Lattimore edited editions.

fagles is good for Iliad bad for odyssey

>> No.19648414

I disagree. Fagles is the best compromise translator if you want a consistent reading of both. Lattimore has a great Iliad and a bad Odyssey and Fitzgerald has a great Odyssey and a bad Iliad. Pope is his own thing and nobody else really matters beyond these four.

I disagree. Fitzgerald's Iliad is a pretty good version.

I like Emily Wilson's Odyssey and Caroline Alexander's Iliad. Better than Fagles, Lattimore, and Fitzgerald. Come at me, bro.

>Look ye, countrymen and Thebans, this is Oedipus the great,
>He who knew the Sphinx's riddle and was mightiest in our state.
>Who of all our townsmen gazed not on his fame with envious eyes?
>Now, in what a sea of troubles sunk and overwhelmed he lies!
>Therefore wait to see life's ending ere thou count one mortal blest;
>Wait till free from pain and sorrow he has gained his final rest.
