I don’t get poetry. I’ve tried reading an occasional poem or a random collection but it does nothing for me—I can count the poems I “like” on one hand. Sometimes I think I expect too much, but poetry just doesn’t affect me like prose does, it just feels too emotionally detached, almost abstract. And I can’t say I care much for the construction of a poem.

I think it might just be lack of exposure that makes it so alien. Are there any poets who feel a bit more grounded and narrative, stuff that you’d recommend to a poetlet like me?

I'm the same way broham. I like some lyrics. But poetry hasn't ever really made sense to me.

Well for example in one collection I tried to read was included Eliot’s The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, and I was just bewildered. I had no idea what I was supposed to be understanding or enjoying as a reader. It was obtuse. I would say I got filtered but honestly it more like driving a car into a brick wall.

I've read lots of famous and critically acclaimed stuff. A lot of it sounds like gibberish to me, I say the same about lot of popular music that earns people millions of doll hairs.

Does it really matter? I'm not trolling you dude. Is poetry not often written differently then how we talk in order to fit some form? And by doing so, it's gibberish to me. So what. You're not going to change my mind. I don't get it. And I don't care.

I have a similar opinion of poetry.

I like narratives like Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome.

You're the fag who made a thread asking for help with reading poetry, and then, you get mad when someone asks what you read. Not only are you a fag but you're also a nigger.

I didn't make this thread. You think there's only one person named Anonymous here.
