Alright I read this but how do I apply it? How do I make sure I recognize the underlying luminosity in the bardos of death? The book doesn't really go into much detail on the how, it just describes what happens

>> No.19733990

Does it talk about not going into the white light?

>> No.19733996

It actually does talk about not going into certain types of light with certain colors but welcoming others. Generally, alluring and smoky light is to be avoided while clear, radiant and almost painful light is the right path

You're supposed to chant the prayers every morning. This isn't an actual book but rather several disparate prayers and plays cobbled together in the 12th century.

This is mostly a prayer book. The only actual moral philosophy discussion is in the section titled "Masked Drama of Rebirth" and even that isn't particularly in depth.

Take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and the Sangha, take the bodhisattva vow, and find a teacher.

It's a book to prepare you for transferring through the intermediate state between death and the next life. When you die, the book is read to the deceased person by a lama so that they can try and recognize the luminosity of mind and attain nirvana.

It is USELESS if you don't know Buddhism 101 though.

And if you do, what is the necessity of finding a teacher?

That's entirely dependent upon you. Your thread doesn't make much sense. You claim to have read this book but don't know the basics.

Well considering Guru Yoga and direct transmission from a guru are essential parts of Vajrayana Buddhism, I would say YES.

I'll read this eventually because academic study of religion is my jam, but whenever I hear or see the title I involuntarily think back to this exchange, which makes cringe.

It is absolutely cringe. He didn't have some mystical experience. He got loaded on mushrooms and thought things he expected and/or wanted to think on mushrooms. This works with anything. If you read about spirit animals and watch documentaries on them and do drugs you will probably see spirit animals. If you focus on dwarves and elves and faces in trees you will see them.
He did not take shrooms and have a 'Bardo Thobol' experience. He prepared himself and went looking for a 'Bardo Thobol' experience and then took shrooms. There is a huge difference.
Drugs can be fun but in the end you only experience yourself on them. You can prime yourself one way or another. He saw what he wanted to see and then acts like it's some mystical reveal. It isn't.
