19814063 No.19814063 [Reply] [Original]

I'm not talking about e-readers, love those things.

I'm talking about monitors and computer screens. I've got lots of documents I gotta read for work, I've tried converting them to epubs to read them on my kindle but the resolution always gets messy one way or another and the documents become unreadable.

I'm saving printing as a last option when I'll lose my patience as the pages are plenty and with binding, the overall cost would round up to 35-40 euros...

Sorry if this is off-topic, I just thought many on here like me download and read books on the internet

kek that's never going to happen, but it's a great idea I could get one of those fancy ones with backlighting.
are there software differences for how well an e-reader supports pdfs or it's just bigger screen -> better?

Ignore this advice, cheap android tablets are utter garage if you want a decent reading experience
Get the iPad pro with the 120hz display, yes it has a heavy apple tax but it's absolutely worth the money
Also Apple books syncs everything inside your icloud so if you have an iPhone you can continue reading on the go where you left - the app is also peak comfy

If I had to do lots of reading on a monitor I'd make sure to have a program like Redshift to make the screen as warm as possible. I don't know about the blue light and sleep meme but I know for sure that being in a dark room and turning on a monitor at 2700K is a very different impact than 6500K. Also turn on "eye saver mode" if you have the option on your monitor. Do whatever you can to make the font bigger and take breaks often. Scanned PDFs are a really shitty format for lengthy reading.

>I've tried converting them to epubs to read them on my kindle
well there's your problem. Kindle is trash. And don't listen to that fucking Apple itoddler shill here too, holy shit imagine listening to that comissioned corpo

Look, what exactly is an epub file? Simply formatted text for reading, meaning its resizeable. It should scale easily, and be universal. The kindle is simply against this philosophy because it wants you to use Bezos' proprietary file type instead. Here is what you can do:

>Install FBReader on your laptop to read epubs easily which scale and can be adjusted
>get a tablet and install FBReader (better)
>get a cheap kobo, turn off the wifi, and just xfer the epub file (best)

And by god OP don't tell me you're reading PDF files all day long, think about your eyes. Well if it can't be helped and file conversion fucked it up, at least use SumatraPDF if on Windows or MuPDF/Zathura on GNU/Linux. At the very least get a comfy matte screen instead of piercing glass glossy screens like what comes standard on itoddler crap devices

Anyway my message may be too late but don't say it has not been said. There are inexpensive, practical alternatives out there only if you open your mind a bit and not open your wallet (and frankly also your asshole) like what that shill is suggesting. disgusting

If it's really a lot and you MUST read on a computer screen, you'd be best off using an iPad or old Microsoft Surface tablet. If you can get a stand for your screen that rotates, vertical orientation on your desktop PC screen can be very helpful (I got lucky at work my desk had a rotating stand, so working with documents is much easier for me now).

I had a surface pro 3 that lasted me about 7 years of very heavy use and it was perhaps just slightly too heavy to hold comfortably in one hand, but it had a kickstand that made it pretty easy to use.

A Kindle Fire might also be good and even cheaper than a Surface, but I don't know anything about their PDF support or Amazon fuckery.

Well wait something like 5 years, and they'll be affordable.
In the meantime, if OP is broke, he should buy a second hand laser printer, with generic toners, which are cheap, and cheap amazon paper.

About binding, you have giant staplers available. Cheap. That is what i use anyway.

Recently i did quite a lot of this shit, reading about scientific articles. There is not so much ways to do it. Laser printer. Cheap paper. Giant Stapler. Read. Store.

OP, /g/entleman checking in here... don't listen to all these people. you don't need to spend a single penny.

Firstly, what OS does your computer run? I can recommend some programs for you.

But regardless of OS, if it is PDF, open the file in Firefox and click the reader button in the address bar. This will give you the option to do dark mode or sepia.

If they are .txt or other editable text files, use FocusWriter which gives you a green Matrix looking text layout which is quite nice.

If you run linux, then Foliate is great, but I am guessing it is Windows or MacOS?

It's weird when people complain about the light contrast or color of ereaders when those features make them far more suitable for reading.
