>man's hat dusty: wife doesn't love him
>pocket-watch scratched: your brother died of alcoholism
>flat ears: you're a typewritist as opposed to a pianist

Would anyone in real life REALLY be able to make observations like this as Sherlock Holmes does?>

yes, with my amazing powers of deduction i can tell you're a white male in his early to mid 20s who has never had sex.

in holmes' time, yes
now, no. although if you watch the benedict cumberbatch series they do quite a good job of updating his methods

The modern equivalent is meme analysis.

So you're not white or male? I'd like you to leave now please.

Its been a while since Ive read the books but Im pretty sure it was far more reasonable, of course you'd have to be a genius or at least quite intelligent but it's semi realistic.

Yes.
He honed his skills to be solely those useful to investigation. Observation, logic, smoke and ash, blood, footprints and shoes, chemicals, botany. He was entirely focused on a limited number of subjects and thus was able to master them. He lacked knowledge in all sorts of other matters, literature, history, other fields of science. If it wasn't relevant to his investigations he completely ignored it.

lol no they are humongous leaps that forego all rationality and logic
it's fiction

pic related

i think if you were really familiar with the sort of stuff you're trying to work out, sort of. you could make what would otherwise be unreasonable leaps because there's only finite ways it can go.

a recurring theme in sherlock holmes is the fact his deductions are fucking insane, and his whole lifestyle objectionable. that's part of the fun

>> No.19978820

Holmes is depicted as being straight up autismo tier with his deductive skills, i.e. that is pretty much all he knows or had any interest in

lol no. Someone post it

These "detective inductions" always irritated me. What if the man doesn't have a wife? What if his is sick and couldn't wipe off his hat? All their inductions are just arbitrary and made to suit the plot.

with my amazing powers of observation i have deduced that most of the people in this thread have never read a single fucking word of any of the sherlock holmes stories

I also kind of wish doyle hadn't emphasized dust, stains, and wrinkles on clothing as much. it really makes it less realistic

but I can deduce you're reading them chronologically, and you're done with Sign of 4 and Adventures, and have moved on to Memoirs. I too just barely started Memoirs and can't wait to hear about him being so smart he uncovers the source of all evil.

also, I have to admit I miss butters. I remember she liked sherlock holmes, that cunt

Presumably because everyone is taking the skill as serious when it’s portrayed in the work as nearly magical coked out schizo babble by a man who basically knows how to predict the future.
