So, /lit/, what were your favorite 1980s/1990s children books?

I am still awe struck that this was intended for little kids to read. Not complaining, the art's fucking awesome.

your first time seeing these images? They're ingrained in a majority of people who, in their youth, read that black book of nightmares and paranoia.

I had a teacher read out loud one of the stories about a man who butchered his wife, cremated her bones, and made her flesh into sausage which led to a growing business of cannibalism...in elementary school, with the lights off.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?
The story I recounted was from one of the books in the series (not sure which)

ALSO; just a heads up, the newer prints of the book had the artwork replaced, because parents complained a lot. If you're hunting for the ones with original artwork by Steven Gammell, I think there are special editions or you can try for used books of the older prints.

I read a story about some guy who grounded people up into sausage, and it had those disturbing illustrations with it. I didn't want to eat breakfast sausage for the longest fucking time.

I bought my cousin's infant daughter this for Christmas. The mom's reaction was, "Oh... thanks."

I guess she disapproved of the fact that it wasn't about a princess.

Dear America is still pretty awesome. Although at the time I didn't realize how scandalous it was for the 12-13 year old in this book to fall in love with a 19 year old. (Then again, Dear Canada had a book with a 12-14 year old character engaged to a man twice her age, who would now be the mother of her new best friend)
