What's the deal with Suntup? Are they closer to Library of America or Folio in style? As far as Folio I've only seen their Tales from 1001 Nights in person, and I was really unimpressed; I could never imagine sitting down to read such an unwieldy volume. I like Library of America though.

I am sharing only one bookcase. Top row is religious material, second row is stuff on wildlife, third row is largely weird fiction, and fourth row is just miscellaneous like mythology and philosophy.

My other two bookcases are full of art books, wildlife photography, nature books that were unable to fit, children's books, picture books, and computer science manuals. I don't feel like sharing those.
Also, Kaczynski should go on second row. Ignore minor misplacements.

Books weren't expensive 10 years ago. Somehow the used and sale books I bought in college (mid 2000s) we're reasonable. Everyman's Balzac was like 5.00 new at Barnes noble, the chouans were 1.50. somehow books became expensive and I suspect it's booktubers.

At least 1/4 were free from publishers or retiring people. Right now I'm supposed to clear out two retiring friends' house.

There are three places I go for books:
1.local used bookstore that prices library of America dirt cheap. My heritage press books were 2.00 to 10 dollars. Loeb's are also 0.75 to 12.00.
2.Goodwill distro center. I get books for .59 a lb. I've bought a few everyman's there. You have to fight professional resellers. They're into kids books, textbooks, self help mostly and won't get modern library, library of America, taschen, or everyman's without dust jackets.
3. Little thrift shop from evangelicals. They clear out members homes when they die and you see things like 20 folio society books for like 2.00 each.

The rest are ebay

I've spent probably $1000 since last August when I started to develop the collection. You just need patience. When we go somewhere out of town I stop in little thrift shops.

These were 5.00 each at my used book shop. It helps that I pass it to go into town from my house. It's easy to pop in daily. That's how I beat the resellers.

It's more about special books. Gibbon is important to me, and I greatly respect h. Trevor Roper, he did the introduction and critical apparatus.

Balzac, Flaubert, Montaigne, Dostoyevsky, Lermontov, turganev, and a few others are the other authors for whom I have multiple translations and editions.

I'm less guilty of being a consoooomer and more of a bibliophile. I could have most of the library of America books, Ulysses Grant was there last week for 2.00. I didn't buy it because I have little interest in reading him. I had a chance to buy a Faulkner box set for nothing, but he doesn't appeal to me.

I mean, I want to buy a few books in German and they have the cheapest editions and I know that Reclam is a very popular publisher of German, but I wonder if it's something similar to Penguin, which, as known, in some cases lacks editorial work and rarely comes with any Preface or critical apparatus.

As one of the last classically-educated types before no child left behind ruined the US, it's both a duty and a pleasure to maintain the standards bestowed upon me by my mentors. >What's the deal with Suntup?
Quality level is about the same as a 50gbp Folio, but they charge 110-200 usd instead. (Talking Artist Editions obviously, the others are even worse value).
The price Suntup goes for on the secondary market is so high you can easily start collecting letterpressed books that are hand bound with mouldmade paper. It's hype sustained so down the line some people will be deep in the hole. That said there are some outliers, Imajica is a cut above their others and impressive at that size and page count. I got all these in a scratch & dent sale and I'm happy with what I paid.

FS has a higher quality than Library of America, better paper, typesetting. If you're just after a good reading hardcover LoA or Everyman is the best value most of the time.

However, depending on the book, also consider getting second hand hardcovers on the secondary market. The quality on "normal" hardcovers used to be a lot higher than you can find now. If the book was printed 1920-1980 chances are it's cheaper and better quality than you could find newly produced.

I've been getting the good books, the important books, and the classic books. Since the pandemic, when panic-stricken boomers limited my access to the university Library, the importance of having a good source of at-hand reference material has grown in my mind. Even though my computer has most of the CUP, California, OUP, and ivy presses in pdf from before 2011 ( when they cracked down on the ebook sharing) I still like the books on my desk.

You also can't download, or at least I haven't seen the option for it, the critical notes in the pleiades and other critical editions.

So it makes sense for me to have some books for my work.

I actually do agree. Doesn't help that they clash with the rest of the shelf's collection, although this could counter-intuitively be addressed by spreading their contents out amongst the rest of the books. Having them clumped together just makes the whole bookshelf clash with itself aesthetically. If it looked more like a chaotic, unsorted mess it could achieve comfy status.

I've definitely considered it. For some reason I've given Murakami more chances than I have any other writer; Kafka on the Shore, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Hard-boiled Wonderland, and Norwegian Wood are four of the worst novels I have ever read by a considerable margin. It could just be the translation, I tend to strongly dislike translated literature anyway. I don't know, I guess that will be "his" (the translators) last chance to impress me.
