Ok so what's up with Murakami?
I read Kafka on the Shore thinking it'd be some crazy difficult postmodern writing. Instead it reads like a quirky bestseller. Yeah I suppose he's deconstructing that stuff but eh its too humanist. Am I missing something besides postmodernist tropes in an easy read?

what do you mean "what's up" with him?
he sucks. that's it

Well, maybe I'm missing something that somebody could shed light on. I was expecting something like Pynchon I suppose.

Your problem is that he isn't very pretentious.

First time I've ever heard that criticism.

i like that book.

I really enjoyed it, it was one of my first forays into books you actually had to think about. The Johnny Walker and Colonel Sanders parts still make me laugh (what was the symbolism there? Was he making a point about the Americanisation of post-war Japan or something?). In what way is it too humanist? Most of the characters were fucked.

Is that the only book of his you've read? I personally didn't like it.. But I love Wind-Up Bird, Hard Boiled and Norwegian Wood.. Kafka blew sack.

I'm with you, Anon. I've read Norwegian Wood and Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and I loved both to death, but the others didn't really do a whole lot for me. Kafka was okay, but maybe not the most deserving of praise. I never got around to buying Hard Boiled.
