You're forgetting one thing: women. Women keep choosing only the fittest men. There plenty of barbarians left in the world, we are not Asians just yet. This book applies to a late civilization like China, we're still too barbaric, and as long as we are freedom will remain.

Probably the best book to start with considering it introduces most of the works already listed and summarizes them intelligently (poor Heidegger getting the short end of the stick). The author is also a personal correspondent with Theodor and helped to publish his second book.

Women are a part of the technological system. Literally a part, the system's white blood cells that maintain the status quo.

He does precisely this part. You should read his other books (and Charbonneau). The solution just doesn't happen to be in a specific critical analysis of the misuse of technique and its consequences.

True, Ellul does present a sensible evolution of events. He still suffers from that strange seething fatalism that seems to define French social commentary, compared to the more aloof matter-of-factness that defines English literatur.

>This determinism has, however, another aspect. There will be a temptation to use the word fatalism in connection with the phenomena described in this book. The reader may be inclined to say that, if everything happens as stated in the book, man is entirely helpless-helpless either to preserve his personal freedom or to change the course of events. Once again, I think the question is badly put. I would reverse the terms and say : if man-if each one of us-abdicates his responsibilities with regard to values; if each of us limits himself to leading a trivial existence in a technological civilization, with greater adaptation and increasing success as his sole objectives; if we do not even consider the possibility of making a stand against these determinants, then everything will happen as I have described it, and the determinants will be transformed into inevitabilities. But, in describing sociological currents, I obviously cannot take into account the contingent decisions of this or that individual, even if these decisions could modify the course of social development. For these decisions are not visible, and if they are truly personal, they cannot be foreseen. I have tried to describe the technical phenomenon as it exists at present and to indicate its probable evolution. Fatalism is not involved; it is rather a question of probability, and I have indicated what I think to be its most likely development.

I wouldn’t. If you go down the a tire just rabbit hole far enough, you just start seeing technology everywhere alike how Marxists see capital everywhere and you become suicidal. Ellul said himself that if you ignore the Christian half of his corpus and read just the Technological half, you’d probably kill yourself, but no one reads the Christian half and you probably won’t either so just don’t bother.

So?
What else is there to do?

The wish to return to being a part in something larger, to being dominated and formed by nature is, quite frankly, the wish to return to being a baby sucking on it’s mothers teat.

You were formed by this society with technology, you would not survive without it.
Man up, try to dominate and rise up social hierarchies.
