What is a good pen for writing in a blank book if I want such things as:

- low hand-cramping from writing
- doesn't leave grooves on the other side of the leaf like a ballpoint pen
- fairly bold line
- is comfortable in the hand

I use a pigma micron 02 (like top pen in pic) but it violates the 4th criterion because of that pointed edge.

I'll consider it, I have 2B and I could test it somewhere. I thought I got hand cramps too easily but I could have imagined it.

I don't want to write with anything that would leave any residue on the opposite page when the book closes, though. One pencil did that to me. (Pic related, on the right.)

>>20980161
You can try a harder pencil which won't be as dark and will be less likely to leave residue.
As for the hand cramps it's possibly that you're gripping too tight causing tension, think of your pen as a small bird you don't want to crush it or allow it to escape

>think of your pen as a small bird you don't want to crush it or allow it to escape

I never thought about it that way. That's useful.

Even so, when I've tried to loosen up my handwriting gets VERY bad. I'm already not very legible with print, and I failed tests in elementary school because of my cursive.

Maybe watch some calligraphy tutorials on YouTube get some tips to try out. Surely there's some Japanese master on there or something, and it could be posture or your shoulder position or myriad things. Anyway, if you're going to be sitting and writing a lot it might be worthwhile

>> No.20980262

>>20980209
I looked it up, it looks like a ballpoint. I have nothing against ballpoint pens but writing across 800 pages, I'm worried I will end up having the pages not sit tight when the book closes because of the impressions.

>>20980220
Yeah, it's definitely worth the research. I did research anti-cramp exercises and they help a little.

I'm just worried that at 33 I won't really be able to change how I write.

>yes I'm biased
>no it has nothing to do with anon's original question

I do find that these pens feel light to the touch and don't smudge too badly despite having bold, broad lines (unless you're 6 years old of course). The price point reflects the quality. To actually address your question though, cramping is usually caused by the person wielding the pen, not the pen itself. Why am I pressing down so hard while writing? is a better question to ask yourself. Regardless, Rolling Writers fits all of your other criteria.

Felt tip is probably what you want, pigma micron is my go too for that but apparently you find them uncomfortable, perhaps explore other brands of felt tip? Fountain pen could work, they can leave a groove but only if you are pushing hard and it should not be a problem for you since you use a micron and if you pushed that hard you would destroy the tip of a micron. With a fountain pen you need to remember that they use water based inks so slow dry and the bolder the line the slower it dries but there are some quick dry fountain pen inks out there. The generally thicker body of a fountain pen makes it harder to grip tightly so that should help with the hand cramping, but the thicker body will take some getting used too. Pick up a TWSBI Eco if you want to give them a try, great pens and only like $35.

If you go the pencil route a mechanical pencil would probably work well, you can not press hard enough with them to groove the paper, the lead will just break.

I'd say a 2B or 3B wood pencil is the most versatile tool. It can achieve very dark greys while maintaining a sharp tip for a long enough period of usage. It must be of a good quality though.

Yeah I think I'm going to give 2B another shot. I realized yesterday I HAD been using 2B in another blank book, but in a mechanical pencil. It didn't look too bad at all. Honestly I might give that a whirl at least for a while. Erasable when necessary, bold enough for anyone to see, no lines on the other side.

I should clarify 100% of what I'm doing is writing, no drawing, so that's why I've been doing pens, at least for a while.

You sound like a felt tip pen guy. I prefer the Tratto brand, made in Italy. They are just a regular plastic stick, but don't cramp as much since you are pressing lightly, and the leave neat bold lines. No grooves either, I've filled entire notebooks with them. IDK other brands of felt tips, but Tratto are pretty inexpensive and high quality, and made in Italy.

That is pretty much my only pen, have a few random pens still left over from before I got it and I got an Eco to fill with red ink for editing but 99% of my writing is done with the Precision. Quite happy with it and the Eco, doubt I will ever buy another pen.

Artist here. I use Micron all day but I wouldn't claim they'd be the easiest to write with.
If you can afford a Pelikan M200 or Lamy 2000 go for something like that.
A Vanishing Point, if you want to stand out a little.
If not, a Lamy Safari or Pilot Varsity should under $40, even under $30 (been a while since I bought either).
