Worth the read?

Shut up zoomer, we both know you can't read anything that isn't a social media conversation peripherally about a book.

Read it and find out.

I am baffled. What could possibly have made you think this?

>>21013665
Sure, but there are quite a few books in my reading list so I thought I’d ask for thoughts from those who have read it, and potentially generate some discussion.

I suppose I’m more interested in whether it works as a history book with philosophical examinations or a philosophy book with historical examples. Though I disagreed with Gibbon’s main thesis I enjoyed his style and the overall narrative.

Read books then talk about them, not the other way around.

It's worth the read, but it is so long and covers so much content you never thought of that it will swallow your entire understanding of the world. Take the red pill?
Also his source is he made it the fuck up, don't expect citations from this guy.

Classical civilisation refers to Greece and Rome, or Apollinian Civilisation since we are talking about Spengler. So yes Anon, the Greeks.

Yes.
Read it as poetry (as Spengler intended)

>"If... nothing else, it would still be one of the world's great Romantic poems"
-Frye

Reading it like this completely changed my way of understanding it. There are sections of it that I go back and re-read because they are so poetic and have a lyrical quality. I'm not a Christian but Spengler's section on the figure of Jesus is beautiful.

Don't read it as "hard history" or something objective. As other anon said, some of Spengler's claims are based on: "Source? its just true bro" logic

Its way more than that. Spengler covers Mathematics, music, poetry, numbers, the meaning of colors in art, architecture, the "meaning" of parks.

For Spengler the Faustian "West" was born around 900-1000 AD.

*triumphant music plays*
spoonfeed man to the rescue!

faustian west refers to goethe's closet drama "faust" in which a man trades his soul to the devil for material desires and as a result is constantly chasing ever-shifting goals, and west of course refers to the societies of western europe formed during the medieval era
put two and two together and you have a people that will always chase a goal without ever actually reaching it, thus, "faustian west"

that will be $399.95 plus tip, thank you

The abridged version distills it into a more concise book. Spengler does some interesting writings about cultures and civilizations, but are not very important to get the point across.
Especially if you're not familiar with Spengler and want to get a feeling of his ideas I recommend the abridged version. Although Man and Technics is the best place to start, I think.
