Why does everyone shit on movie tie-in editions? They're cheap/easy to find and it has the exact same text as the regular edition.

Why is that a bad thing? You can throw it in your backpack/pocket/bend it/not have to worry about it getting stolen. Reading expensive books just feels like a chore to me since I'm always worried about damaging it so I can't get immersed in the story.

that is actually worth it because it's from the LOTR films

I want my books to look good.

They’re ugly as sin and take away from the imagination. Books that have little to no illustrations will always look the best.

That sounds like a skill issue. I read hardcover books at the beach or park or bar or wherever without worry because it's just a book

Movie tie in books look awful.

They aren't talking about getting expensive books they're talking about getting normal paperbacks
Film tie in editions are always terrible quality

The covers are ugly as fuck for some reason. The only exception I ever recall seeing was a LotR edition with the Argonath poster as the cover.

>> No.21014983 [DELETED]

Pic related is the first copy of LotR I ever owned. Before this I would just get them from the library at school. Idk, I think the cover is comfy and I still give it some sentimental value, but it's not my favorite cover ever either.

they are bad for readers who haven’t seen the movies but buy these books. seeing Gandalf before the text can describe him burns that image of him on the cover into their minds before they can imagine it for themselves. LOTR is not the best example here but you get what I’m am implying

I think even before the movies illustrated versions of Gandalf were pretty common choices for cover art for LotR and The Hobbit.

An artists rendition is much different than a still of the actual actor portraying him in the film

I have these editions. The paper quality is really bad and the spine pretty much disintegrated from reading it once.

Really doubt you read.

What? At all or that specific book? Why?
I read it nearly two decades ago and still distinctly remember the paper being tissue-like and the spine dusting up my hands.

Generally I couldn’t care less, but this one really pissed me off. Hated seeing his stupid mug on a Faulkner classic everytime I went to the bookstore.

I love my LotR tie-in editions but they were gifts 20 years ago so they've got a lot of sentimental value. Doesn't hurt that the casting was on point so the covers don't look garish.

That’s the one I have and it looks fairly nice. Fellowship has the argonath, two towers has orthanc, and rotk has barda-dur. It isn’t photos form the movies though, it’s in a painted style.

Yeah, no shit, its paper.
