If it's anything like the anime it'll be trite garbage presented in the most pretentious way possible, punctuated by UUOOOOOOOOOOHHHing

Don't do it, it just doesn't worth the time, if only you could read Japanese and understand all the puns and hidden meanings

But you can't, so just watch the anime and enjoy the cnuny

The official translation has some absolutely awful changes, like changing Tsukihi's catchphrase from "platinum mad" to "dagnabbit mad". A change so pointless and unjustifiable that I have to assume it was done maliciously. Whoever is at fault for such a crime against society should be shot.

I feel like some the worst aspects of monogatari anime were caused by the writers trying to stay too close to the source material. For example, in the last season they have this big, detective, mystery arc and they conclude it with "Aha! the body has fully decomposed in 2 years, in this apartment building, leaving no trace!" and then it just ends. I've yet to find a ln that would be superior to the anime.

I remember a guy on /a/ was claiming that the monogatari books are harder to read than war and peace. I never verified that claim.

Picture this: Y(capitalized)ou're sat out there, really, more laying if you will. Position is irrelevant (I added purely as a way to start this post), what is important is the book. So the Monogatari light novels? If you can't read Japanese then don't even bother with them. Even if you're a pedophile, it just isn't worth it. (In reality): I haven't read them (I can read Japanese) and I haven't heard much of them. But as reading is more of an exertion than an activity (in terms of exertion), then I'd say read them, or learn Japanese by reading them.

Your friend,

I haven't read Monogatari, but I read a few of the Zaregoto books by the same author. Most of the wordplay is thesaurus-level synonyms. The author will pick a kanji and look up 5 words that contain it, and then use them in one sentence. He'll write things like "My anger welled up automatically, autonomously, autocephalously."
Like yeah, it's a fancy word, but it takes 5 seconds to look up words that contain "auto"
I think it's very good for its intended audience of high school kids, because it does increase their vocabulary, and prepare them to read actual literature.
If any Monogatari readers could chime in and say whether the Monogatari series is higher quality I'd appreciate it. I did hear that they're not marketed as light novels in Japan, unlike Zaregoto, so my criticism could be off base

The anime is very much an audiobook reading of the LNs with visual gags placed on top.
>>21212651
Sounds about right. Monogatari does try to have some semblance of cohesion with its base concept and the marrying of Shinto mythology with a Jungian exploration of its deconstructed anime tropes, but it's nothing high-concept (and a lot of this reeks of the most pure LN trite you can find out there, all doing some similar meta-commentary on X or Y) and still marred by nothing but the semantic trite Nisio believes to be the height of entertainment.

I personally enjoy Spice and Wolf, even though it isn't very good from a literature point of view. It's a middle ages story with light fantasy that's refreshingly romanticized, in contrast to western media, which always goes for the dark ages meme.

>> No.21213528

Is Japan the only country that produces lighthearted romance fiction for men (or teenage boys at least)?
I mean I assume some YA aimed at boys might have some romantic bangers but that whole sector is flooded with romance for women. Or if there is an adult book for men with romance in it then it's some sickdark shit that ends in tragedy.
I don't know. Seems odd to me that men in the west who want to read romance are more or less railroaded into becoming a weeaboo.

There's not much odd about it. It's always been like this.
