If you want a standalone novel that is both good and fairly short, I'd suggest something by Mary Renault. Or maybe Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield, but that's a bit longer.

There's more options if you're willing to read non-standalones.

Not OP here. I've got Imperium and Lustrum, but I'm yet to read either. Without giving any spoilers, which in your opinion is the best from these three?

Why not make the Mississippi River the border?

Imperium/Lustrum are chronological and the first two installments of an uncompleted trilogy. You wouldn't know it to read them though as they are completely stand alone and are simply related in that they are about Cicero. Imperium is the first and is very good.

Pompeii is rather unattached to the others, but still worth reading.

Awesome, thanks.

I recommend The Raj Quartet by Paul Scott. The first book stands on its own, but you'll end up reading all four volumes. It's a long historical fiction about the end of British rule in India. Scott's thesis is that any colonial power is inherently racist, and therefore corrupting. There are no innocents in terms of colonialism. The Raj Quartet is an important text in historical fiction and in post-colonialism. It's also a fantastic read that plays with concepts of memory and storytelling - it's sort of like a 2000 page Rashomon but that's not the focus
