this books is really lame. it feels like the writer wanted to engage with the philosophy of existence but also didn't do any research on the topic.

Finished this today. While what he presumed in his polemic was novel I couldn’t help but to think that it’s a very Boomer take on life. He states things that are obvious parts of secular life— he’s smart enough to see religion is not the make believe golem mentally I’ll BPD girls think it is but at the same time the nihilism of his take may only shock old people who were the most pampered human beings in all of history. Disappointment and nihilism are what millennials traffic in on a daily basis and frankly it’s cringe and passé to think his views are interesting or countercultural in any way considering he trumpets what’s essentially the status quo position (except for the import of endless 3rd worlders to function as a slave class of course). Generation X still thinks dark stories and depictions of despair in art are a reflection of our era when we’ve moved past this and into a new reality of pessimism. That being said he’s a great writer and the perfect person to write horror. I specially agree with and enjoyed his passages on writing horror. 2/5.

As a very unhealthy individual, I agree with this book that life is nothing but suffering. Your body WILL deteriorate with age and you will suffer because of it and be pessimistic. It just happened for me early in my life. When you grow up, you will understand this book and agree with it.

relevance status: somewhat

https://www.edge.org/conversation/thomas_metzinger-benevolent-artificial-anti-natalism-baan

>Obviously, it is an ethical superintelligence not only in terms of mere processing speed, but it begins to arrive at qualitatively new results of what altruism really means. This becomes possible because it operates on a much larger psychological data-base than any single human brain or any scientific community can. Through an analysis of our behaviour and its empirical boundary conditions, it reveals implicit hierarchical relations between our moral values of which we are subjectively unaware, because they are not explicitly represented in our phenomenal self-model. Being the best analytical philosopher that has ever existed, it concludes that, given its current environment, it ought not to act as a maximizer of positive states and happiness, but that it should instead become an efficient minimizer of consciously experienced preference frustration, of pain, unpleasant feelings and suffering. Conceptually, it knows that no entity can suffer from its own non-existence.

>The superintelligence concludes that non-existence is in the own best interest of all future self-conscious beings on this planet. Empirically, it knows that naturally evolved biological creatures are unable to realize this fact because of their firmly anchored existence bias. The superintelligence decides to act benevolently.

In The Dust of This Planet I think addresses this somewhat.

I've only read excerpts posted here and on other boards, not the book itself or any of Ligotti's other works. Why does he not advocate suicide in spite of his conclusions? I get the anti-natalist notion of suicide not solving ones own existence, but why is the relatively smaller suffering inflicted by mass-suicide not preferable to the longer, drawn out agony of existence? From a purely rational perspective, I seriously do not see why this isn't preferable in his view.

you should understand your position in the dialectic nature of human consciousness. Religious cucks will seethe but human rationality will lead, ideally, to the understanding that consciousness is inherently shit and will eventually choose to end humanity existence. So, your current position is in this long process of getting, universally, in this stage. While you are in it, you should do your best to make people's lives less painful and their time in earth less hellish. That's how I cope, at least. Read Phillip Mainlander

Ligotti insists that humanity will never make the deliberate decision to extinguish itself. Peter Zapffe came to the same conclusion about 77 years earlier.

>> No.21548927

ligotti, zapffe and the like are all frauds for not committing and encouraging suicide if they truly believe in the absolute truth of their beliefs, which Ligotti most certainly does and yet does not practice. Any response by an anti-natalist regarding the "risks of suicide" and the act "not being worth it" are incoherent retardation when the axioms established by his worldview have already been addressed. Either life is inherently a horrible tragedy of over-evolved sentience that ought to be ended as soon as possible, or there is a degree of value to be had. Whilst the latter can vary wildly, the former is a simple fact of the anti-natalist worldview, and failure to live up to this ideal paints a more accurate picture of those espousing it than anything.

however ligotti is still a fantastic author and his adoration for lovecraft is ironic given that anything written by ligotti vastly outshines the writing of lovecraft's own best work.

I drew the exact opposite conclusion. After a life of unrequited empathy towards things, now I wonder what I'm doing. I have no empathy for the cow ground into sausage, so why do I have empathy with that hominid with all of the gold? I want that gold. If I can take that gold without alerting the tribe, I will.

I want to stick my dick in instance of the more aesthetically put-together hominids. And so I shall, to their objection or not.

See my dilemma?
