Is this worth reading 1200 pages?

>> No.21907095

Just listen to the audiobook, old man

NO get the abridged version. It was written as a serial and he got paid by the word. The unabridged is needlessly wordy for this reason.

Did you read the whole thing?

this, the book (unabridged) is perfect for the audiobook format

I moreso meant "is this worth the time investment"
I dont mind that its long. An audiobook would be just as much as an investment

you can listen to an audiobook while driving, walking, on a crowded train etc. where you couldn't read normally so it's less of an investment to me; I'd pretty much never sit down in a quiet room and just listen to an audiobook
anyway it's a fun and satisfying adventure book, it won't amaze you with philosophy, it's just a long plotting ride setting up big emotional payoffs

I read the whole unabridged book, and after he escapes the prison and sets up his plan, he starts introducing so many characters that you never give a fuck about. The story between Valentine and Maximilien is the worst and most boring it gets. The middle is a slog. It picks back up again when he remembered that he was writing a revenge story.

>oh no the introduction spoiled the heckin plot!

Just fucking read it and continue as long as you enjoy it. You’ve wasted more time getting strangers to validate what you read than if you just read the fucking book. I hate you and I hate what the internet has done to literature.

Don't listen to these two fags, OP. The unabridged version of the book is great and every single word is worth it.

Point still stands. It's one of the few classics, so if you are truly interested in reading as a whole, there is no "worth reading" unless you are a pseud

No. Get the abridged. I read the unabridged and his prose do not warrant that slog. The only memorable points in the book was the beginning. Him in prison with Abby and then every other plot point that would already be in the abridged version.

>> No.21909417

>>21907307
Yep. A massive portion of this book is not interesting at all

>> No.21909418

Unabridged a slog. Do not cuck yourself. I made that mistake a few years ago and looking back I always wish I would have just read the abridged. His prose are not bad but they aren’t that good.

Count of Monte Cristo is mediocre. Of course, it stands far above most slop, but compared to proper literature it is utterly unimpressive. You could go your whole life without reading it and there would be no loss on your part.

100% a poseur. I bet your favourite book is some pseud trash by Pynchon or Wallace.

THIS. I cannot stress enough that this book is absolutely BOGGED down. It's a cool concept right? Guy about to marry his sweetheart, is arrested, meets a dude who tells him about treasure, escapes, finds the treasure, and then goes out to seek his vengeance. I read the whole thing and I HATED every moment of it
