I'd never read it and wanted to see why people hate it so much. It seems like a fine book to me though.

The reason of why people hate it so much it's because the book focus a lot in its protagonist, Holden Caulfield.
Now, Holden is a teenager boy who lies a lot, has anger problems, and doesn't really knows how to properly connect with people. Besides this there is a psychological aspect of it going on. This makes a relatable character for teenagers, for young adults this makes a tedious character since they are not mature enough to empathize with it but not young enough to relate to it, and for adults it makes an empathizing character because you can see how you went through Holden's problems but he's still dealing with it.

If you want an example from another form of media, imagine Shinji from Evangelion. I actually googled "Characters similar to Shinji from evangelion" to give you more examples, and picrel came out.

That said, it's one of my favourite books ever.

I liked it except for the part where he rapes his sister. Weird

Don't get scared by people saying "He rapes his sister, Phoebe". That never happens.

Required reading in most public schools because it plants the mental seeds for kids to think they discovered some profound nhilistic truths about life so they can grow up to become depressed and hedonistic

They forced us to read this back in high school. At the time I didn't realize that it was actually a real book, I thought it was just something they made up for South Park. It's one of the worst fucking books I've ever read in my life, Holden is an actual fuckup, he's a retard who starts the book by failing every class in his boarding school and he sells all the expensive shit his parents gave him for booze money. He gets beat the fuck up by pimps and gets molested by his English teacher. When he runs out of booze money he breaks into his own house and convinces his sister to give him her Christmas gift so he can spend it on more booze. I distinctly remember that as the moment I hated that little fuckers guts so much

Anyway after we finished reading it my boomer English teacher stood in front of the class and asked us "isn't this book so relatable to you young people?" was it supposed to be? what the fuck

He did not get molested by his teacher. The man patted his head while he was sleeping and then Holden ran away and slept on a park bench.

He also did not break into his house and use his sister's money for booze. He gave it back to her so that she could ride a carousel at the zoo.

Anyway I think he was just a sad fucking kid with mental issues, man.

This makes loads of sense honestly.

Americans are actually retarded for making high schoolers read this, it must really be insufferable. It's like they really want you to hate reading. You can only properly understand and empathize with Holden during adulthood.
