Sorry but I'm not going to do the Ghandi vs. Jesus thing nice try. But a lot of people who are said to have "died for their cause" wouldn't have chosen it. They're still martyrs and died *because* of it, I don't mean to lesson their accomplishments, like Dr. King or that kewl guy from V For Vendetta, but they probably would have preferred to live longer and affect more people.

OK, sorry too much coffee or not enough....And no way, I think he's depicted as jumping right up there onto the cross but I don't believe it happened that way at all. If you buy into the whole gospel telling of Christs story he was born with the knowledge he would be crucified, and it is also stated that he chose to sacrifice himself for mans sins etc. I don't think Gandhi could say the same, Also Gandhi really fucked his country up, he was one of the people responsible for the split of Pakistan from India, and the hostility of Muslims towards Hindus. He also never really secured India's independence from England it was GIVEN to India by England, which sends the message that it India wasn't capable of taking her freedom. This was mostly due to Gandhi's refusing to allow any sort of armed resistance movement to act. The simple fact that a armed revolt of India during the height of the Battle of Britain in WW2 would have probably been enough to free India from colonial control belittles Gandhi's philosophy.

He died for his cause, of course he did! It doesn't mean he said "guys, going to kill myself for you now, please behave". He made that choice when he chose to fight for what he believed. His death is not unrelated to that and he knew it was possible for it to happen from the very beggining. Of course he would avoid it if he could at the particular moment, but who wouldn't?

I fail to understand what is your notion for "dying for his cause".

1. There was a choice and he made the noble one
2. Of course he would have avoided, just like any other person would. Do you think a soldier would rather die for his country than to fight just as fiercely and... survive? According to your logic, the only ones who can die for their cause are the ones fighting for eutanasia.

>> No.2237668

>>2237657
Dying FOR your cause, like Bobby Sands did, is different than dying BECAUSE of your cause, as a RESULT of your beliefs, like Martin Luther King did. Actually it's more the result of the murderers beliefs than the victims.

When you set out on a path that is likely to get your killed, and you do it anyway, that's a lot of wonderful things like "noble" and "courageous" and I actually have more respect for those folks who specifically choose death as a means of conveying their message. The latter seems self-important and cowardly.
