Do you think they are a legitimate way to experience a book? Are you able to understand/withhold information by listening to a book instead of reading it?

How could anyone be against audiobooks? They are the primordial way of storytelling. All myths and legends were shared through oral narratives.

I'd say they are ideal for fiction mostly, storytelling. A lot of books do not have audiobook recordings, especially nonfiction.

I need time to think after reading certain paragraphs or refer to previous context. I get much more out of this.

When I listen, I find it hard to playback audio to a specific text. And pausing after each text gets annoying.

So, I don't think its a legitimate way to experience a book fully.

But audiobook also helps me gets the basic overview of the chapter while I am doing something.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks at work because my job is mainly menial labour. I can usually blast through two books a week on average. It's a good secondary option, especially if you have a long reading list, but I would never replace it with reading.

Great for genre fiction that doesn't need much thinking. Anything else would be torture because 'rereading' a sentence is a pain.

Any personal recommendations? Have a job where I just drive around most of my shift and don't like podcasts with my regular music playlist getting stale. Liked the Roadside Picnic audiobook though

Great for fiction, not so much for nonfiction.
A good narrator can truly enhance the experience of a story, especially one who can do accents. The guy who narrates A Confederacy of Dunces brings the characters to life brilliantly. And of course Richard Poe doing McCarthy's books is fucking incredible.

There's nothing inherently wrong with audiobooks but you have to give them your full attention or you won't retain hardly anything.

>audio moves at a constant pace
>different ideas have different complexity
Its alright if its a video that scrolls through the text so you can stop and read yourself when needed. Usually they suck though.
