I know, it totally indicates Holden was abused.

It is commonly said that this book is about adolescence. That is true but omits something important. It is not about adolescence as a generic phenomenon. This book is about a paedophile's adolescence. It is the coming-of-age story of a pedo. He is agonized by the inevitability of growing up. By the brutal, unstoppable, never-ending liquidation of innocence, the organic elimination of children, the child Holocaust that Nature has set up and that everyone approves of. He is trapped in a universe where his desires can never be ethically consummated and where the object toward which they are directed is constantly wilting and perishing and transforming into something he finds ugly and abominable -- something which he is himself transforming into. He is about to leave the Eden of childhood and enter forever into the realm of maturity, which he finds venal, grotesque, and hypocritical. This has a special significance for him because he is a pedo. Unlike an ordinary, well-constituted adolescent, he can never adjust. He can never make peace with the adult world. It will always represent, for him, a rupture, an intrusion, a Fall.

Read the book as if it is a boy in a psych ward resisting talking therapy whose father raped him. The first and last chapter will tell you his father raped him. The two chapters in his brother's bed with his sister will tell you how he rapes his sister after you read how Holden tries to fuck girls.

Also Holden sees abuse everywhere and is attracted to it.

I read it for the first time just recently
it's not good
at all
100% with no irony this is not a good book
I literally (no exaggeration) cannot understand why this book has survived in the public memory. why was this taught in schools? how could anyone see anything of value in this?

Why the fuck you write like this? Why do you even bother with reading if you cannot even express yourself in a coherent manner. Genuinely, kill yourself.

the reminiscing about the brother was too unsubtly sentimental when the drive of the book is more an unseen and vaguer malaise. its a bit too in your face next to something as delicate as phoebes detective stories. its too tragic and novel like. i still love the novel though. salinger might be my favorite writer. every other thing he wrote and published is more interesting however, although perhaps not better.
