Of course writers on reddit are going to believe the thing that 100% of writers believe.

Also your homicide cop analogy makes no sense. Homicide cops generally don't like murder. You'd hope a writer would be enthusiastic about fiction. If you don't enjoy fiction yourself, how on earth are you going to write fiction that other people enjoy?

I don't know why you're so upset about this. Do you just feel intimidated by having to read a lot? Just start slow, a few short stories here and there on the weekends. That's what I did.

do you want to know how homicide detectives really work? they interview people. they visit crime scenes. they draw conclusions. to put it simply, they just do the work.

A desire to make money, or some loose attraction to the writer’s life because it seems intellectual. People who don’t read typically make horrible writers. They are also horrible at making arguments, apparently. Just look at all the stupid analogies that have been made in this thread here (ex. detectives don’t commit homicide, therefore you don’t need to read to be a good writer). Stupid people absolutely love bad analogies. The mental retardation runs deep, but we can just let them continue writing whatever incomprehensible garbage it is that they’re working on. These are the people who, when they show their work to their friends and peers, are shocked to hear that it’s trash; has no narrative structure, no character development, ungrammatical writing, and so on. I always laugh when one of these people posts a shitty writing sample, asks what to do to improve, and then, when asked what kind of books they like to read invariably says “oh, I don’t really read books.” Of course you don’t, I think. Keep on trying though! Scribble, scribble Mr. Gibbon.

Yeah, it is. It's the difference between creating and consooming. Reading the greats can give you guidelines but mountains of absorbed text will not suddenly turn into talent. Style is personality. 6-year old Nael wrote a better poem (Tiger) than countless lit professors ever could. If you have something to express, the craft will come.

Anyone can 'be' a writer. But if you want to be a serious author, worthy of respect and praise, being well acquainted with the best and most esteemed authors from several genres, styles and era's will only serve to improve your writing. It will give you a greater frame of reference, and a better understanding of literary traditions throughout the ages.
