Ask a femanon who just pity-fucked Harold Bloom anything.

BEFORE you ask:

Age: 23
Occupation: MFA student at an Ivy League university (will not specify.)
Reason: I figured he would be dead soon, so I wanted to cheer him up. He always looks so sad. Also, so I could tell people I fucked the most famous literary critic in the world.

So, is it true that MFA students write stuff that only MFA students would read? Is this why you need to fill your life with the meaningless status–boning of ancient professors?

Is being an MFA student an occupation, or simply sucking at the teat of conned university donors? Is it this parasite morality that also results in such degrading action?

Essays, some long–form journalism and a few book reviews. I won't be more specific than that on 4chan. I blog and collect a constantly–baffling amount of ad revenue (not enough to live on like some bloggers, but a strange amount vs my production). I'm battening down the hatches in the new year and writing a novel—transformed from a longer non–fiction piece I had been working on—that I realized would be better communicated as fiction. My "career", as it is, is quite minor, it's not my sole source of income (but I'm planning on writing the novel full–time, as I don't think I could do it well while working another job). I'm only in my mid–20s, so I'm not too worried about where I am. I do it because I want to. Not because I "love it" (though there are times I do), or because I "have to", but because it is something I do well and makes me feel accomplished. I have my pretensions, of course, but they are mine and would best stay that way.

Eh, people would probably say "literary", but I can't say I'm fond of the distinction. There are genre writers out there that just write pot–boilers, to be sure, but there are "literary" writers who do the same thing, but at far less profit. There are genre writers out there with good prose, and there are some with great ideas who have middling prose. Great ideas can save middling prose like great prose can save middling ideas. But there are literary writers who are all prose, no plot, no idea. I'd probably rather read bad genre fic, if I was going to waste my time.

You are nothing more than an object to relieve his biological urges, the fact that you have a mind capable of reason means nothing to him really. However this isn't the worst of it, you fucked him not for greed, nor for ambition, nor even for physical pleasure. You fucked this man for bragging rights, you fucked him simply to say that you fucked him. Out of all of the reasons to fuck someone this has to be one of worst. abbi Bloom is not the answer. He doesn't understand the nature of linguistic experience that I describe. He never understood it. His mind is devoted to teasing out (i.e. inventing) "themes" and "types" and "issues" and the equivalent to what Northop Frye called "topoi," as ways of attempting to expand the importance of the works he describes.

He is a connect-the-dots critic who finds (i.e. makes) static intellectual patterns; not someone who, in the Poirier way, surfs breaking waves of energy. Bloom's great poets and playwrights are "thinkers" not "doers." That sums it up. (Though, to avoid misunderstanding, I should add that I also believe in artists as thinkers, but in a much more complex, temporally engaged way than Bloom understands. The artist is not a formulator of "thoughts" in the Bloom way, but a flowing expression of the shifting activity of thinking, experiencing, and feeling -- on the move, in flux, in process and revision.) Bloom's current status as eminence gris for the New Yorker crowd is an expression of the fashion system, not the wisdom system. He did a lot of damage to Ph.D.s of my generation, and he continues doing it to more recent students. People always prefer ideas and theories to activities and movements; they prefer statements of knowledge to exercises of energy and power. Static forms are much easier to deal with and write about than moving forces. It's the way our brains work. And it's what great literature (and music and dance) exists to shake up.

Christfag detected. A life consisting solely of animal pleasures would be a rather sordid thing. I'm not sure it's possible to be completely fulfilled, however, without gratifying some of the animal impulses. This is why religion is such a scourge--it imposes unhappiness by trying to repudiate man's animal qualities. Sometimes I think all of religion, and the invention of god (in man's image, is a charade intended to falsely elevate man. Religion is born from man's unease with his primeval, primate-based essence.

Denying or ignoring this part of you is not being honest with yourself, and I'd imagine such abnegation would set you off-kilter. Only when we come to terms with our primate-selves will our animalistic past cease to be an obstruction. Disavowing the impulses, like erasing slavery from the textbooks, does us no good.

I hate that because it is patronizing. It is like people who say "It is good for children's literature." It's a good book. Whether or not it was intended or appropriate for children is not the point.
