Hello, /lit/. I don't come here often, but tonight I want to ask you all a question.

What are the greatest books ever written? I want to especially get into the classics, pre-1920's I mean.

So, would you care to help me? Thanks.

Read Harold Bloom's The Western Canon. It has everything you need to know.

>> No.2285133

The most important book ever written in human history is Thus Spoke Zarathustra

actually: read some of the books that bloom thinks of as canon first, then read the actual book "the western canon"

it's not that good to read it if you have no idea what any of the books are, since it's mostly essays about authors.

Divine comedy is the masterpiece of western literature.

No idea. I'm sorry. Maybe save the pic and ask somewhere about it.

>The Great Gatsby

Nice read, but isn't it pretty... entry-level? Just wondering. I want to read more advanced literature.

build your way up, dogg. also it's worthy in its own right, even if it can also be appreciated by high schoolers.

Gatsby is not entry level. It is a super read I should think

Well, alright. I did skimmed it during high school, that's why I was a bit concerned when you guys mentioned it.

Homer, all of it plus the Aeneid.
The bible
The quran
Roman de Renard.
All of Goethe.
Divine comedy.
I could go on and on. But this are the all time classics you can't go trough life without them.

Which soever is pleasing to you. I will not claim one over another

High school doesn't do it justice, it's way more in depth than your teacher could ever hope to teach. The great thing about it is visiting it again and seeing the influence from history, mythology, religion, and psychology in it as you get older and learn more.

Fitzgerald is a remarkable man, so I will take your advice seriously. I want to thank you for this, because I'd probably die and never really READ his books, and that would be a damn shame.

Thanks, again.

Thank you for all of this!
