many philosophical works are refuting or building off of previous works. if you start with modern philosophy and create a chain backwards of every work cited you will get a canonical reading list.

yes. there are somethings you might understand on a shallow level but you won't understand the full position without context. if you have a good memory you might not need to reread the later books, instead you will recollect the arguments and have new incites about them
