I reread Worm and Ward by Wildbow and been reading a lot of Parahumans fanfic lately. I'm well aware of Wildbow's flaws, both early in his career and in general. Nonetheless, Worm has a special place in my heart. Some of it is nostalgia but a lot of it is the fact that it seems almost perfectly tailored to my specific tastes. If you're looking for a recommendation of a novel length fic that bucks a lot of the battleboarding and self-insert trends of the fandom I recommend The Underside of Gotham. It doesn't require intimate knowledge of either franchise and is graciously quite dissimilar from the Wayne Family Adventures webcomic. It's very character focused.

I started reading xianxia a week ago after all the shilling, specifically 'Martial World.' As expected, the prose is terrible, the plot itself is mediocre, and the characters feel 2D most of the time. But there's just something so mesmerizing about it, gets my blood pumping, you know? I don't remember the last time I actually rooted for a main character as much as right now.

How do you think Aegon is going to take King's Landing lads? I think Connington's Greyscale could play a majorrole, like I see him potentially using it as a deterrent against Cersei showing it is a route he could go down if she doesn't abdicates the Iron Throne just so she shits bricks and caves in then leaves to go back to Casterly Rock, but at the same time I don't see him being the type who'd resort to biologoical warfare to win back his birthright. Let me continue lamenting the current state of sf and my inability to find anything worth reading. But before I start I gotta ask - who the fuck writes those "best new science fiction and fantasy" lists? I am amazed at how bad (and cultish) those are.

Anyway, onwards and upwards:

Hardwired by Walter Jon Williams - I really liked this novel. A well written, proper cyberpunk romp avoiding all of the clichés that still reads fresh. You got your badass protag, his equally badass lover slash bodyguard (she actually reminds me of Molly from Neuromancer and given that this novel was published in 1986 and Neuromancer in '84, I am not sure who stole from whom), crime syndicates, corpos from beyond the gravity well, it's all there.
And as I said the novel is not dated both in terms of character interactions and technology used, which is no small feat after going through half a dozen cyberpunk "classics" that read like something out of the Stone Age.

It's dumb not to read the original works first, especially if you're WRITING. Nonetheless there are plenty of fanfic authors whose prose and standpoint is pretty similar to Wildbow if not better in some respects. The appeal of fanfic is that you already know you're a fan of the characters/setting so you're not making as much of a leap of faith assuming it's tagged as canon compliant and/or rated highly by committed fans. Although keep in mind I do read plenty of stuff aside from fanfiction.

Xenocide any good then? I read Ender's game like 2 years ago and finished Speaker for the Dead last year. Speaker was very different but overall it wasn't too bad I guess

>> No.23191058

>>23191007
Maybe it's just because I read the Rama sequels and my standards have dropped (especially as far as characterization and plot goes) but I'm enjoying it so far. It has that same feeling I got from Speaker for the Dead, which is that it's really effectively exploring the consequences of its scifi ideas on a human level.
Even though I usually just enjoy big dumb scifi ideas on their own and don't need an effective human story (ala Asimov), I'm enjoying it a lot. Would recommend, especially if you're wondering what happens to everyone after Speaker - it's not leaving me disappointed like the Rama sequels, and I don't see how it could.

>> No.23191080

>>23191007
I will add that if you liked Ender's Game a lot better than Speaker, don't expect Xenocide to return to form. I like Speaker a whole lot better, but I'm weird in that I enjoy when a sequel goes in a wholly unexpected or even contradictory direction if it does it well.
Maybe wait a few years, or try Ender's Shadow, I hear that's good.

Undying mercenaries for sci-fy.
There's 20 books out at about 400 pages each. The premise is in the near future a fleet from an empire that controls most of the galaxy shows up and annexes the world.
In order to fund their economy humanity creates mercenary companies with machines that allow you to regrow people after they die.
You follow James McGill, a lecherous retard from georgia who will fuck anything human or human-adjacent that he can.
He joins up with one of the dregs of the various merc companies and goes on adventures to alien worlds. Most of these adventures involve him ignoring orders and somehow ending up on top in the end.
The over-arching plot is about improving Earth's place in the empire from annoying-shitholistan to annoying-but-valuable-shitholistan

just finished Lord of Light. I enjoyed the themes of religion and using it on the masses, and the theme of Do We Have a Self or Not, but man it was a bit of a confusing read, kinda like a fever dream almost. So many different characters to follow, all getting different bodies and then even different names. So many places. the book was original, that's for sure, but not as good as I had hoped. I was also expecting more Buddhist tenants and philosophy and instead I got humans playing as gods battling each other. Is Peter Hamilton retarded? Are people who like Peter Hamilton retarded? So far Salvation has been one singular chapter of interesting setup then someone says "how did you two meet" and the book goes on a tangent of their backstory for like half the book's length and none of it is interesting at all
The author also loves name dropping products, brands and places like it's a replacement for actually writing something interesting. The book is FULL of shallow namedrops of random shit for no reason at all. There's also cyclical gender changing humans with sie/hir pronouns and it's as annoying as it sounds

Near analogies seem to make it relevant to the present.

Some very funny conversations, meaning the backwards logical arguments, but everything inbetween just felt like filler. Having done my fair share of acid I can relate to the feeling Sheckley is trying to get across, but that doesn't excuse the weakness of the book.

Lions of Al-Rassan, while paiting a beautiful picture of 11th century Iberia, is nevertheles the work of a typical anglo in love with an idealized, naive version of Al-Andalus.
Kay paints their decadence as borderline positive because some vague sense of "tolerance", while slandering the christian and the moors for being "fanatics", in the most blatantly onion-faced, californian reading of a historical situation I have ever seen, ignoring the deep complexities and contrasts that existed within andalusian society that often could be as violent and cruel as it was "tolerant". His main character has basically no relevance for the plot at all, what should have been her greatest moment is instead given to her father, and so far it seems that her mission is just getting railed by whatever powerful man appears in the page.
Genuinely good concept ruined by borderline girly inclinations. I am amazed Kay is actually a grown ass man and not a chick in her 20s.

That's basically anywhere near the poles on Earth. There's Asimov's Nightfall where it's always day and night in the apocalypse. Anything set on a tidally locked planet would qualify. Well I have two story ideas:

One's where vampires do some kind of The Matrix-like technique to put their whole continent (or the whole world? I haven't decided yet) under permanent night, but there's still humans in the area so they have to adjust as well as the plant and wildlife.

The other is a setting where a planet's axis is abruptly fucked with by magic and a full day lasts a fortnight, so 7 weeks of daytime and 7 weeks of nighttime.

I'm sure a lot of species of plants and animals would not survive this change in either setting, but I don't know the full ramifications.

Thanks for the responses.

Present tense in general is an awkward way of telling a story. When you tell a story to your friends or whoever, you use first person past. "I went to the shop and saw Elon Musk banging Kim Kardashian" or whatever. There are books I've read where the first person present actually works but that seems to be because the author knows how to make characters have a voice i.e American Psycho. Every word seems like it's actually coming from Patrick Bateman's mouth, and you can understand his worldview just from the way he talks. I don't get the same impression from Red Rising, it seems more like it's just some lobotomised cunt dictating his autobiography.

Like if the whole thing about year long winters in asoiaf was actually accompanied by showing a civilization with the culture and practices to withstand an apocalyptic event every few years.

I got fucking scammed. The prologue was kino so I bought it only for it to turn into a boring fagfest right after. I love Hellraiser and I can't even finish this shit. What happened to Clive Barker?

the will of the many was packed full of plotholes. i enjoyed it for the most part, but it let me down by the end.

I love that series, I've devoured the 4 main books in 2 months while studying for my profissional exam. Have you read Murtagh?
I'm reading the Elder Scrolls novels based on the fourth game, maybe you'll fancy them?

That's your fault for not knowing that Clive Barker is one of the most openly homosexual horror authors who loves putting it in almost all of his fiction when it's short fictiona or novels.

I think I've just gotten too picky/autistic, when I was younger I didn't mind blowing through a book a week even if it wasn't really too my taste, now if one even hits something minor on my list of annoyances I just drop it and move on to something else

I just read the original 4, but since I enjoyed them so much I'm going to pick it up some time later this week or next week
>I'm reading the Elder Scrolls novels based on the fourth game, maybe you'll fancy them?
Not the biggest elder scrolls fan but just reading extended universe/tie in books for other series is something I've considered I just know how hit or miss those can be

Maybe you should apply that to here as well. Moving on that is due to minor annoyances.

It's not as good as the Earwa stuff. His strength is his purple, biblical, high fantasy style, when he tries to do modern gritty realism it just doesn't hit the same.
