It seems like he only enjoys music for either image or being interesting. That's really shallow either way.

Well, for starters "Shabazz Palaces" is essentially Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler from a Grammy award winning hip-hop group called Digable Planets. Listen to their 2 albums.

If I didn't know that about Shabazz Palaces in the first place, I would've blew those EPs off and assumed it was some contrived bullshit.

Anyway, go to rateyourmusic.com, it's generally a good place to start, better than /mu/. Besides for electronic music, they're shit for that mostly. I recommend Resident Advisor as a place to start with some good electronic music.

Kinda, it can.
I usually do this:
>genre I'm interested
>top albums
>sort by genre
>find albums rated highly that I haven't heard yet

It's also just a good general music database. So for instance if you're into Shabazz Palaces, it would also have Digable Planets in the related artists. Unlike Last.FM which recommends you P4K shit for listening to them. Or The Cure to Jesus and Mary Chain (because of Robert Smith).
It's decent for film too.

You can find people with your taste, or taste you admire, friend them and then see what they like. It'll calculate your predicted ratings too if enough people have listened to the album.

I don't really like music.

All popular (culture) music is shallow background noise and nothing more. It's useful only to as a way to gauge the popular feeling of the time in which it was produced.

Classical music almost definitely does have artistic merit but I think you need to be highly trained to appreciate it, and at least play one intrument to a high level. Otherwise you're pretty much just a permanent dilettante. I don't have the time.

Most people (esp young people) just use music as replacement for a personality/identity anyway, so they can have an opinion on something doesn't require an informed critical perspective. It's funny when hipster types try and pan their music off as better or more intelligent than the stuff on the radio, because it's pretty much exactly the same.

Fuck music.

Are you fucking kidding me? This is so vague while also employing a false dichotomy, as if there is "non-literary" and "literary" music people can agree upon.
