What are some writing habits that grind your gears? Mine are ellipses. Most modern western novels are extremely hard for me to read due to the fact that... every... sentence... is... constructed... like... this... making... me.. want..... to... rip.. off.. my .... own... skin...

How about you?

when authors spell out a character's accent, particularly when its thick enough that reading it becomes 100x more tedious

Every German philosopher

Was reading a book by Hans Hermann Hoppe a while back and a single sentence literally spanned an entire page, then right after that he had a 3 page long footnote

>"As long as"
I prefer "so long as" or just "so long" since it's less repetitive (aliterative?)
>I'm going to go..."
Ridiculous and repetitive, most times the second 'go' is not even necessary
>have/had had/have
This one drives me right up the wall, I don't care if it's gramatically correct or not, it's just so awkward to read
>overuse of ALLCAPS in dialogue
Italics suffices to convey a sense of emphasis in speech, allcaps in dialogue should be used sparingly, if it's say, not the proper name of something. Otherwise it just sounds like josh peck saying words louder for emphasis...EMPHASIS! I dunno why but ye olde works don't sound that awkward with allcaps
>overly descriptive actions
I read light novels a lot and this is something you see sometimes, the really specific action scenes.
"Sato jumped back, backflipping 5 times midair and landing 11.675±.230 meters away from his opponent..."
>figurative use of "literally"
like, literally, its giving ick

I'm sure I have more but nothing comes to mind right now. Dunno if all these makes me autistic

Some niggas just have no prose. They will write 1000 pages of dry ass fiction and expect me to churn through it because the plot is half-original. The worst part is that it's not even restricted to young adult fiction as a genre - I tried reading Dune having watched the movies and was amazed at how bland it was. People kept comparing it to the Lord of the Rings so I was anticipating at least some degree of stylization to the description. It was lacking. Villeneuve's film rendition did more for Dune's excitement of the imagination than any page in the series.

Now that I've pointed it out to you, you're going to see this exact phrase again and again in workshops.

There is no way to avoid using had/have. And it is especially important when distinguishing past from present or even describing possession. I don't know what you expect here.
