Joseph Conrad only started picking up the English language in his 20s and started writing in his 30s.

I'm 19 and monolingual; do you think it's possible, in this day and age, for a person like me to learn a foreign language and become a writer in it?

>> No.2357380

Prolly not, Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was a better man than you can ever hope to be.

>> No.2357385

in general: yes, many people do and did so.

but taking your nimble question on 4chan as an indicator: in your special place probably not.

btw, usually those people were surrounded by their "new" language, so if you are in Utah and you want to write italian poetry, you are shit out of luck unless you move to italy

I seem to recall Bertrand Russel writing that for all his mastery of the English language, Conrad had an extremely thick Polish accent.

And he wasn't monolingual when he started learning English - he already knew French.

Learning a language makes it easier to learn other ones.

>>2357385

This guy is correct - you have to be immersed in a language to become sufficiently fluent to write in it - you also have to read a lot in that language, naturally.

Yes, that was the point I was trying to make.

I know. I was re-iterating your point in a more coherent manner.

No you weren't.

Yes I was - you vaguely stated that Conrad could speak another language and left it there. I made the connection to his learning of English. I made your point more germane.

Prick.

Possibly, I'm not from an English-speaking though I feel quite comfortable with the English language, in fact more so than my native language when writing. That being said, I've been exposed to a great amount of English since I was very young.
