Post some greentext stories to regale us for an hour or two, and make are grey lives a little more interesting.

>went for an interview again at Waterstones in 2011, did a lot better, but still failed because the manager (in her own words) wanted to re-employ returning Christmas staff

I worked in a second-hand bookshop for a while. The shit some people use for bookmarks disgusts me.

Mostly food wrappers and the like. A couple of condoms. Once or twice I found some money in the book though ...

My friend owns a small independent bookstore in a leafy German suburb. I worked there for a couple of months when I lived out there.

>>2425575
I concur with this. Although sometimes it's not so bad. A first edition of a book written by an American historian for a German audience had a $50 bill in that was being used as a bookmark.

>> No.2425589

I own and live in a bookstore that was really messy until one day a strange man came in and he turned out to be very helpful so I hired him and now we have all sorts of wacky adventures.

Is this here true? I need a job
And would much help provide.
If you'd employ me, I would move
Across the continent.

I'm very keenly organized
And have read well enough.
I'm honest, too. I do not steal
And do not shirk my work.

I'll practically work for beans,
As I am very poor;
My living standard, too, is low,
So I don't need much $.

>> No.2425615

I'll probably take a job at some small book store, next to my studies - I'm studying economics I have a lot of time to kill

OP, I fucking love Waterstones, I live in Yorkshire, so the nearest ones are in Meadowhall, Huddersfield and Leeds.

The first two are also too loud, but one in Leeds is God Tier, it's really quiet, lots of books, a lot of times I'll go there, just to read. The staff are always so friendly. Wish I worked there but I live a bit too far away to work there every day.

Being public library staff is shit, being uni library staff is fantastic. If you can't intuit that yourself. I hope you really like books though because either route is going to net you no money.

That's not uncommon at all. I've worked for Waterstone's stores in Sheffield as permanent staff, and as a Christmas temp in Bradford. It's so much easier for everyone to work with people who already have the training, especially as it's the busiest time of the year. Christmas temps usually don't want to leave after they finish, so that's why most reapply as soon as a position opens and get the jobs again.

>> No.2425867

It seems to me that it's fuck hard to get a job in Waterstones. I've a friend who tried for like 2 years to get in - finally got taken on as a xmas temp, then they binned him and never asked him back.

They never advertise, and they seem to have a backlog of CVs to go through. It seems there's a lot of graduates willing to work for minimum wage stacking John Grishams up.

I guess I sort of see the appeal, but I don't really see the appeal

I wouldn't say it's that hard to get a job there; when I was hired I had no previous employment history at all and I was still at uni. They don't accept CV's and the application form is online so you just need to keep checking their website for vacancies in your area.

You're right about it being somewhat of a graduate's graveyard job.

Yes, I should. This is actually the purpose behind my department, to bring these pieces out into the light where people can see them instead of travlling to our Reading Room. All the mss are online free anyway. "Pre-23" stuff sometimes gets posted on "Project Websites". Anything in particular you're looking for? Field of interest?

I think it's very hard. I dazzled them (lol in my recent interview, plus I've worked 3 retail jobs before, and they STILL didn't want me. Yes, I wore clothes to the interview. No, I didn't mention /lit/ (that would've been a red flag, no doubt).

But, there's a bunch of regular seeming people working there, who know books well, but no better than me, plus there's one very pretty girl who can't be older than 19 or 20, and I doubt she has much prior experience. Damn those excellent folk!
