Hi.

Can anybody recommend a good free program to write a book with?

I want to write a book.

>> No.2508432

notepad.exe

Anybody who needs a special program to write something has nothing interesting to say. You should be able to write with pen and paper. It's about the words, not how you put them on the page

I've always liked using pencil and paper as it gets me away from the computer and when I transfer it to a word processor I tend to pick up any spelling/ grammatical errors and I begin editing as I write the story up.

While I appreciate that, I still would like to write in the most efficient way possible.

A program that allows me to get my thoughts onto paper (or the screen) would be preferable.

I'll write in notepad if there's nothing that comes to mind though.

My handwriting is, shall we say, doctor-ish.

Is this even a real question?

Microsoft word or if you want to save some space, use google docs.

Word is not free.

Google docs I did not know about, but their terms or service seem fishy, like they might take ownership of anything I write.
I don't think I could contain my paranoia.

Hm I use a program called WriteMonkey. It is actually pretty good, you should check it out.

If you are more into planning and stuff, you should check out Celtx, but I think that program is a little bit overdoing it.

what the fuck does that even mean? just write

Fair enough, if you are paranoid you should install linux and use a free program like geddit.

Or you should download a free alternative like Open Office/Libreoffice if you're on windows.

Looks pretty good.

I'll try Open Office out along with the Write Monkey thing and see which I like.

Thanks guys!

I know what notepad does, and I know what MS Word does, there is a large gap in the functions.

I'm cheap though, so I'm trying to find something in between.
Please try to appreciate that I'm only trying to make this easy on myself.
It's going to be a very long book.

Ah good to hear. I basically use WriteMonkey for simple writing. Once I finish my 2000 words or a chapter, I post it in OpenOffice and fix grammer errors.

MS Word works for me, OP.

>>2508445 is crazy, having to retype everything is needless and time-consuming. Better to have it in an easily modified and edited format from the get-go.

if you're on a mac, Jer's Novel Writer is great.

Ehh, again, transferring the words to a document serves as a first revision, lets me catch the errors that we all know slip by spellcheck now and then, gives me a good sense of whether my narrative flows or needs work. Also I have pretty decent WPM so it really doesn't take that long to do and I'm keeping my mind in the story.

Not saying my method is best by any means, just felt like it's worked pretty well for me in the past.

anything *TeX should do the job well but it takes time to learn it.

Also do your hands a favor and get a keyboard with cherry blue mechanical key switches, it's worth it for long typing sessions.
/g/ent here

Well I'll see how it works out.

Holy crap those are expensive.
My laptop has a decent keyboard, I'd assume, it's an Alienware.
