i had interest in literature as a child, when it was forced on my through school,

but very little interest outside of that, i find the medium lacking in comparison to film

am i missing out?

I,too, loved the Redwall series... I read them through middle school, but lost interest when they stopped being good... My favorites were probably: "Mossflower," "Mattimeo," Salamandastron," "The Bellmaker," and "The Long Patrol." And "Redwall," of course... I think the last decent one was "Loamhedge.." The battle scene in "Salamandastron" was pretty dope, though... Unfortunately, I opened up "Mossflower" a couple weeks ago, the prose was kind of lame, but what can ya do... It's fantasy for children. I also totally forgot Brian Jacques died...
