Paper backs rarely matter. They are not as valuable as hardcovers.

Repeat copies by various book companies (Signet,Penguin, etc.) rarely , and I mean very rarely, are worth much.

Nothing in Ulysses is difficult to comprehend in the manner you're all referring to. If you non-native speakers read some English poetry you'll eventually grasp unorthodox syntax. Some parts of Ulysses though, like I suppose this >>2778539 guy is referring to, are intentionally incoherent:

>Universally that person's acumen is esteemed very little perceptive concerning whatsoever matters are being held most profitably by mortals with sapience endowed to be studied who is ignorant of that which the most in doctrine erudite and certainly by reason of that in them high mind's ornament deserving of veneration constantly maintain when by general consent they affirm that other circumstances . . .

You might be able to glean a bit of intelligible thought from of this section of the book but the effects of obfuscation and verbosity is deliberate, and it's just as important that you grasp the details of the writing style than the thoughts conveyed through it.

I think Joyce trying to parallel The Odyssey in structure was a mistake (ie, having the episodes match the books of the Odyssey thematically). I mean, episodes 5 and 6 are totally unnecessary chapters and the writing is boring. Anybody else feel the same way?

True, but I felt he could have put that information into an extended episode 4 (or condensed 5/6 to one book) and cut out a lot of the rather mundane stream of consciousness. Luckily they're both pretty short episodes.
