It may take a year or two working a shit job after college, OP, but as a fellow english major I can say it isn't all hopeless. I tutored part-time at a community college and earned barely anything, but I worked an internship on the side and kept sending my resume out. After 6 months I got a full-time job at an entertainment website, and a year and a half after that I'm an editor at a news site.

(you're going to find that most of the editorial work is on websites -- not that you'll have to work remotely, but the medium is online)
