There was a thread here on /lit/ about attractive authors and it got me wondering, why is it that musicians on the whole tend to be much more attractive than authors? Louis CK mentioned something like along those lines. 'You think there'd be one ugly guy with a guitar, but no. Fucking zero.' (but of course there are exceptions)
What is it about music that attracts the attractive? Or are they made attractive because they play music?

There are shit tons of ugly guitarists. I'm not sure where you're getting your information.

But even following your logic and assuming that your hypothesis is valid, it makes no sense that physical appearance wouldn't matter in performance entertainment.
Seriously think for a minute, OP. When does a writer ever have to show his/her face? There's the "about me" in the back of the book, sure; then there's the occasional public interview, if the author in question happens to be renowned enough.
And that's not even counting how little looks matter for confident men. If you're a guy and you've got the confidence and the charisma, you'll be popular even with an ugly appearance, so it's not as if this is even a necessary correlation.

>> No.3355058

Good musicians tend to be very ugly.

But you don't know about them because they aren't very popular because their ugliness makes them unmarketable

Also you have to be pretty outgoing to get on stage and perform a gig, and if you are ugly you may be insecure about that

>implying all GOOD male writers weren't handsome in their youth

>> No.3355063

This is very easy to answer:

There are many ugly musicians, but No Record Label Deals for Fuggos. A musician's looks are part and parcel of what makes people buy their music, and all music producers know this. Attractive people are cherry-picked out of the ugly.

With writing, the looks of an author are almost totally immaterial. In fact, I can't even say what some authors I like even look like. Publishers rarely market books based off the looks of the author whereas the music industry always markets music based off the appearance of the artist.

There you go.

Thom yorke and co. arent particularly physically attractive, but they do have something that makes them attractive, the power of being onstage im front of a bunch of people and knowing that they're adored, plus being able to play music gives you an instant +9000 charisma boost. Ive seen it before my eyes, uggos getting the puss by virtue of their muzik

Truth. You can't write well about snatch unless you've had a decent bit of it.

Joe Pass is one of the best guitarists of the 20th century and he wasn't attractive at all. As the New York Magazine said "Joe Pass looks like somebody's uncle and plays guitar like nobody's business!'

>Implying the fundamental topic for any writer is sex, and women.
Also, look. Many writers were average-looking, but not extraordinarily handsome. Hemingway looked pretty good in his youth.
Steinbeck was passable.
Poe was just awful looking.
Fitzgerald was average or only slightly handsome.
Yes. Byron was good-looking.
I could go on, but the fact is few of these guys were studs, in terms of how they looked.
And that's completely disregarding female authors; I don't know why the attractiveness of authors automatically moved to getting "snatch," but it's not altogether accurate.
(P.S. Yes, my samples are mostly from the Lost Generation of writers. Look at most eras and I'm sure you'll find similar results.)

None of this applies outside of pop music.

Try again.

2/10 on the spin but you used it as a cruel joke so that trips you up a bit
