Plath and Oates are both very accomplished poets, going as far as hating them reveals a judgemental trait typical of the under-read and ignorant, something further supported by the use of 'middlebrow' as a negative categorization (you can have Bukowski and Murakami as I've never read the first and read a little of the second, which was pretty good).
If you're truly too pretentious/elitist/idiotic to want to be seen in public reading these 'middlebrow' texts why the fuck did you ask what to read to be noticed. Sure you could read Bely or Pauline Réage but nobody will pay any heed as they won't recognise the texts

A lot of best sellers. Same things that guys buy, really. Except guys do buy more sports/fantasy books than girls.

Yea usually pretty evenly mixed genders, maybe a few more male than female.
And pretty rare, maybe 1/60 customers or so.
To be fair the area was primarily rednecky I guess, it was a small mall too, not many people would come.
It is however the closest barnes and noble to UCF, so you'd think more people.
I don't know.
My specific store was the 3rd smallest in the entire country so we also didn't carry a lot of unpopular, kind of obscure "literature" so they didn't have much opportunity.
The people who bought the books though were usually pretty young, rarely old people buying nice books. Also generally unattractive, for the most part. Alone, as well, never with friends or maybe with family, like parents buying them the book.

Huh. Funny story about parents buying their kids books.

I was in Barnes and Noble with two of my friends looking through the philosophy section, seeing if anything new came in or simply going through a book we didnt know anything about. While doing this, I was looking for any books by Kant since I have a class on him this quarter. While searching there was this kid standing next to me, arms crossed, one hand covering his mouth. Every once in a while he would laugh to himself.

Eventually I told my friends I couldnt find Kant, and the kid next to me immediately darted for a book, laughed, read a little, and walked away with it.

Me and my friends thought it was pretty funny and curious. We were trying to guess what book he took off to buy, and we thought it was pretty cool that he read philosophy at such a young age.

A few minutes later he comes back, puts the book right in front of me, stares me in the eyes, and then runs off. His family soon comes after looking for him and a book he wants, The Metaphysics of Morals - Kant.

The book he put back was that book, and the only copy that was left in the store.

I like how you seem to think that will immediately end up in a hookup.

Not true at all. I'm the same height and have never had a problem attracting women. Guys who aren't good with girls either fail to realize (or don't care) that confidence is what's most important. You can be a short, ugly guy, but if you're confident, funny, and you at least try to look presentable, you won't have any problem with women.

When I read on public transport, you are unable to tell what book I'm reading due to the angle I hold the book at. Am I doing it wrong? Should I hold the book so it's perpendicular to the floor, at arm's length?

Forget about it. Just continue to do what makes you happy and constantly improve yourself. Dress well, get fit, read good books, get a job that makes you happy, etc. If you like yourself then chances are someone else will, too. But you have to make sure you're making contact with people or at least open to it otherwise it defeats the whole point.

To be honest, for me it's just a case of not finding people worthy of my company. There are a couple (namely, two) friends in real-life that I actually enjoy talking to over a cup of tea, and several on the internet that are not too bad. I just don't understand how "intelligent" (I don't have a better word, it's not about maths or books) people can actually stand the majority of other human beings on this planet.
