Out of all the depressing literature recommended in the wiki, which would you say is the best overall read?

Probably Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Most of Steinbeck's other works such as The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, and The Winter of Our Discontent can get just as depressing as the titles listed on the chart.

For me, Dazai's No Longer Human is the most depressing book on the chart. If you like it, read Confessions of a Mask by Mishima. The rest of Mishima's works aren't very depressing, but you should read The Temple of the Golden Pavilion and The Sea of Fertility tetralogy anyways.

Some people find Dostoevsky's works depressing. For certain, if you want depressing go with Notes from Underground and The House of the Dead. Demons is his darkest novel, but like Crime and Punishment, it's a hit or miss for a depressing read.

Kafka is a lot like Celine, he's more dark humor and oppressive atmosphere than depressing. That oppressive atmosphere depresses a lot of people though. Read The Trial, The Castle, and his collected stories if you're looking for that. Amerika is like P.G Wodehouse in comparison, but it's worth a look if you like Kafka.

Read Camus, specifically The Stranger, The Plague, and The Fall. Read Mann's Buddenbrooks too.

Ryunosuke Akutagawa's short stories can get very depressing. Grab the penguin edition of Rashomon and 17 other stories.

TLDR
>Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, The Winter of our Discontent
>Dazai's No Longer Human, Mishima's Confessions of a Mask
>Dostoevsky, Kafka, Camus, Akutagawa, Mann's Buddenbrooks

The Metamorphosis made me shed tears. In the beginning, certain descriptions made me smile or chuckle, but once Kafka began describing the apple stuck inside of Gregor, how slow his movement became thanks to the apple, and the dust collecting in his room and on him, I just couldn't take it.
