Hey /lit/,

I have a simple question. Why is it that women worked so hard to get the right to vote, only to vote for white men? When the saves were freed and given the right to vote during reconstruction, the instantly voted Hiram Revels into office. I'm sure if their lives weren't later endangered by voting, more blacks would have sprung up in official positions of power.

Women won't be killed for voting for other women, so why is it that they never took advantage of what they fought for?

Maybe you guys can point me in the right direction, maybe some writings on the subject. I don't want to go to /pol/ I think you guys are better.

Thanks

And that was obviously not the case for years, I want to know why they didn't break away.

Women got the right to vote in 1872.

The first election after that (in 1874) was between the leaders of three parties Benjamin Disraeli, William Ewart Gladstone, and Isaac Butt. They couldn't vote a women into power, as the newly liberated women didn't have a choice in who the party leaders were. It wasn't until Thatcher that a woman got voted in as Prime Minister.

Hmm it looks like I forgot to mention that i'm asking specifically about American women, thanks though.

You can lead the horse to water, but you can't make it drink. American women mostly enjoyed their slavery, and if a few of them were enlightened enough to see it as the shitshow that it was and seek to overthrow it, they could not convince the many who had not seen through. And to this day they still haven't.

Because it was white men who gave them the right to vote and the illusion of the won struggle.

How did you come to that conclusion though? Can you provide any proof that any of the other candidates would have done anything better for them specifically? It is like watching a movie where a guy shows mercy and decides not to kill a bad person. Everyone watching says "I would have killed that piece of shit", but when the gun is actually in your hand and you have it pointed at someone, it is much much harder.

they didn't run for major electoral positions and men opposing women's suffrage and overall rights continued to take seats year after year. what do you want, names? just look at any republican of the time period.

i mean shit, wadsworth's wife was the president of nswa and he still said fuck you.

you can only go by word of the candidate. it still holds true that men against women's rights took office after women already receive the right to vote, even if all women didn't vote for these men they still allowed their spouses to.

it doesn't seem like they cared enough about their rights in the first place.

Well that's just plain wrong. Women got the right to vote in 1918 in the UK, and not until 1928 could all women over 21 vote, only women who were houseowners and over 30 could vote until then (virtually none whatsoever).

OP, y'all retarded. You don't get rights by putting someone of the same minority as you at the head of government. Unless enough people want something, fuck all gets done. Things like congress and house of commons get in the way. It's all about majority ruling - thinking that getting people into positions of power means anything more than their political careers is naive.

Plus, ya know, a lot of women didn't even want the vote when they got it. They believed everything men told them about their inferiority for the most part - until civil rights groups started changing national opinion. Many women either didn't want to vote or just voted how their SOs told them too.

Well, I'm going to say for one that perhaps not all women think their suffrage in this day in age is something that is so fucking paramount that it 100 percent influences their involvement in politics.

blacks freed from slavery broadly, and rightly, no longer felt any loyalty to whites. but women still have not gotten over the Stockholm syndrome with which the age of marriage inculcated them. they voted for their husbands.
